  • Michigan's last Hot 'n Now in Sturgis will celebrate its 35th anniversary on June 7—featuring cool fun stuff—while plans are underway for two more locations to open near Gun Lake Casino and in Alpena this summer.  WJIM AM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Michigan homes are lighting their porch lights green today to honor veterans on Memorial Day — a tribute that began with Walmart’s campaign in 2011. The effort was revived with the Greenlight a Veteran campaign in 2013 and uses the color green to reflect the military uniforms seen in service.  WJIM AM
  • Kris Kaleta, a chainsaw artist, carved wooden sculptures including a bear, a giraffe, an eagle and a turtle at the corner of Jolly and Aurelius in Lansing on an overcast May day—he began his work after carving a birthday gift for his brother. He competed in events in Pennsylvania and sells his pieces to fund buying a car and securing a permanent home.  WJIM AM

  • Local grocery stores are helping neighbors save on food essentials this summer. Meijer offers up to 60% off store-brand items until mid-July and Kroger gives a 10% discount to military members today — easing rising grocery costs for many families.  FOX 47

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A disassembled, unloaded gun was found on the Dwight Rich School of the Arts campus on Thursday — no students or staff were injured — and the school will add metal detectors to enhance safety.  FOX 47
  • Michigan State University hosted the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals today with over 600 teams from 31 states and 11 countries, drawing about 16,000 guests in dorms and 3,500 in local hotels — an event that boosts local businesses and introduces future Spartans to the campus.  WLNS

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services warned that tick-borne diseases such as Lyme disease and anaplasmosis have risen sharply—Lyme cases increased by 168% and anaplasmosis cases nearly quintupled in recent years. Officials urged residents to use EPA-registered insect repellent, perform daily tick checks, and seek medical care if symptoms like fever or muscle aches occur.  WLNS
  • Shoppers in Michigan must check their pantries for recalled Yellowstone Brown Sugar Molasses Baked Beans after Vietti Food Group announced the recall on May 2 due to undeclared soy allergy risks—customers with a soy sensitivity risk a severe reaction. The 15 oz cans display a "Best if Used By Feb 17" marking and must be returned to the store for a refund.  WJIM AM
