CRIME NEWS

  • The FBI warned Michigan residents on May 15 that scammers used AI to send realistic texts and voice messages meant to trick people into sharing their personal information—residents are urged to verify messages using official contact details.  WJIM AM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Michigan native and Grammy-winning musician Billy Strings will perform at the 53rd annual Charlotte Bluegrass Festival on June 19 at 8:30 p.m. at the Eaton County Fairgrounds in Charlotte - the festival runs until June 21.  WLNS
  • Hamilton is live at the Wharton Center in East Lansing and will run through Saturday evening — select tickets are available from the center. The musical first premiered in 2015 and has earned 11 Tony awards and a Pulitzer Prize.  WLNS
  • Old Town Lansing will host its second annual Roper Romp on June 7—residents will dress in muumuus and curly wigs to celebrate the retro style of Helen Roper with a lawn party, special cocktails, a costume contest and door prizes.  WJIM AM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Lansing is seeing a spurt of downtown projects as construction crews break ground on City Hall, an affordable housing complex, and a 28-story skyscraper expected to become the tallest building amid rising costs driven by steel and aluminum tariffs—while experts warn that higher material prices and uncertain interest rates may soon affect project designs and rents. Building costs increased 1.18% in the first quarter of 2025 and developers say current contracts mean projects will continue despite inflation concerns.  Lansing State Journal

  • Michigan’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development warned campers not to bring untreated firewood from home—doing so may spread invasive pests that could damage forests and the state’s agriculture industry.  WJIM AM

  • Michigan lawmakers are considering roadside saliva tests to detect drugged driving — some experts report an 11% inaccuracy rate and warn of privacy risks with DNA storage. The proposed legislation will need approval from the Senate and the governor — officials say the tests could help law enforcement while critics, including the ACLU, remain concerned.  FOX 47
