ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Lansing fire crews fought three fires in five hours early Thursday morning including on Parkview Avenue where a home was heavily damaged; no injuries were reported and the department advised residents to check smoke detectors and maintain safe grill distances (free detector installation is available via 311).  FOX 47

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, Lake Lansing kicks off its 24th Summer Concert Series at the Bandshell with Allentown; Fish Ladder Music Park opens with Starfarm + DJ Dav at 7 p.m.; Q106 presents Cody Parks + the Dirty South at Grewal Hall, and Ovation holds a ribbon cutting at 2:30 p.m.  Lansing State Journal
  • Lansing residents can find mini versions of the iconic Big Penny at spots including Potter Park Zoo, near the LANSING sign and on Michigan Avenue by The Exchange. The mini tributes appear as the main bridge undergoes a temporary setback (recent vandalism removed key features).  WJIM AM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Michigan State University is hosting its 2026 Spartan Reunion from May 27 to May 29. Alumni honor the 50th reunion for those who graduated in 1976 while touring campus landmarks, including Beaumont Tower.  The State News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz has introduced House Bill 5966 to suspend the gas tax, potentially saving drivers 52 cents per gallon (roughly $8 per fill-up) until Nov. 1 or until gas prices drop below $3.50. The measure now waits in the House Appropriations Committee.  FOX 47

SPORTS NEWS

  • Special Olympics MSU brought together students (and community athletes with intellectual disabilities) for weekly basketball and flag football games at IM East during February and March, building community and promoting sportsmanship. The club, which included about 30 athletes and 10 volunteers, wrapped up its activities this academic year.  WKAR
  • Senior shortstop Ayden Smith helped lead the Haslett Vikings to two wins at the Diamond Classic last week, recording a .374 average with 24 RBI and 38 stolen bases and boosting the team’s momentum ahead of the state tournament.  Lansing State Journal
  • Following President Kevin Guskiewicz’s departure, Michigan State University faces uncertainty over its $500 million Spartan Stadium renovation (in pre-design) and the broader For Sparta campaign, with leadership stability in athletics called into question amid Athletic Director J.   • Lansing Catholic senior Avery Dunneback improved her power this spring with 11 home runs and over 200 career hits, helping the Cougars repeat as Softball Classic champions on May 15 and gain momentum for the state tournament.
