BUSINESS NEWS

  • Scooter's Coffee is preparing to open soon in the former Biggby location on Michigan Avenue near Frandor Shopping Center — interior work continues on the site — with an opening date not yet announced.  WKAR
  • In May, new businesses opened across the region, including BoxLunch at Meridian Mall, a third Chick-Fil-A on the southside, and Einstein Bros. Bagels near campus; Terra Firma Bouldering Co. launched its climbing gym in Okemos (open June 5) while Blue Owl Coffee Co. closed its East Lansing shop.  Lansing State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • City officials raised a Pride flag Monday at City Hall to mark the start of Pride month, with Mayor Andy Schor (and council member Ryan Kost) joining the ceremony in front of the state Capitol.  Lansing State Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • New recycling compactors have been installed at the East Lansing drop-off site thanks to a $400,000 EGLE grant to modernize community recycling. The system now reduces truck trips and will soon include clearer signage and new recycling containers at key community locations.  City of East Lansing

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Social Security checks will begin on Wednesday, June 10 for retirees with birthdays from the 1st to the 10th+ checks for those with later birthdays will follow on June 17 and 24. SSI payments were sent on Monday, June 1+ and a 2027 COLA forecast will be announced in October.  Lansing State Journal
  • A construction project began Monday in downtown Lansing that reduced Michigan Avenue to two lanes between Museum Drive and Grand Avenue for bridge repairs over the Grand River and limited street parking between Grand Avenue and Cedar Street. Crews expect to continue the work through mid-September.  FOX 47

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The Lansing Housing Commission held a ribbon cutting at Riverview 220 apartments on Monday, June 1 to celebrate the completion of two affordable housing projects. Officials (including Mayor Andy Schor and State Sen. Sarah Anthony) took part in the event marking a new housing milestone for the community.  Lansing State Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • LSJ holds a vote for the girls high school athlete of the week with candidates from East Lansing, Lansing Catholic, and Olivet. Voters can choose between freshman Cayla Hawkins, who won the 400 dash, senior Emily Peters, a four-time state champion, and senior Jayda Stowell; voting ends at noon tomorrow.  Lansing State Journal
  • Greater Lansing girls soccer teams have their MHSAA state tournament pairings set, with matches for Division 2, 3 and 4 scheduled today and later this week. Kickoff times range from 5 to 7 p.m. at sites in Waterford, Ypsilanti, Ann Arbor, Royal Oak & Cadillac.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan International Speedway hosts a NASCAR weekend from June 5 to 7, with ARCA races on Friday evening, Truck Series on Saturday, and the Cup Series race on Sunday; campers will start arriving mid-week at the campgrounds surrounding the track.  Stacks 92.1
