CULTURE NEWS

  • Lansing Community College will offer free theater with a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream as the first show in its 2025 Summer Stage Under the Stars series, directed by Mary Job. Attendees may bring blankets or chairs to the outdoor amphitheater or join the indoor performance if weather shifts—concession fees will help fund the college’s theater scholarship fund.  Lansing City Pulse
  • Decades ago, Terri L. Jewell, a Lansing Black lesbian poet and author who took her own life at 41, left a lasting body of work that is now preserved in Michigan State University’s Stephen O. Murray Keelung Hong Special Collections (a resource valued by students).  Lansing City Pulse

  • Michigan State University’s Groove Doctors 3— a trio of professors who teach constitutional law, English, and history— have played every other Tuesday at the Peanut Barrel on Lansing’s west side since spring 2023. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Consumers Energy filed a $436 million rate hike request that would raise electricity bills by about 13% as the company seeks to improve service reliability plus Michigan Attorney General Nessel warned the increase could make bills unaffordable and urged state regulators to reduce the request.  WKAR

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Demolition began on the Walter Neller building in downtown Lansing after years of neglect and a 2016 unsafe declaration; Granger Group opted to replace the structure with a five-story mixed-use development featuring 76 residential units and retail space, and construction will start mid-June—its new design aims to revitalize downtown.  WKAR
