  • A nonprofit in Holt is helping local cancer patients with everyday tasks by providing free house cleaning and yard work—founded by Elizabeth Read after her mother’s battle with cancer, the group supports patients like nurse Ashley Siegenthaler as they focus on healing.   • Fourteen-year-old Damian Brown died after being electrocuted near Woodworth Elementary on June 3—his funeral will be held at 2 p.m. June 8 at Leslie Middle School while his family receives visitors on June 7 at Vickers Leslie Funeral Home.  Lansing State Journal

  • University leaders and research experts met on Mackinac Island during the Detroit Regional Chamber’s Mackinac Policy Conference to explain how federal funding drives breakthroughs in health and job growth. Michigan State University hosted a panel that warned even short-term cuts to funding could slow progress in research—experts said it risks delaying gains built over decades.  Michigan State University Today

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ingham County health officials confirmed a 1-year-old girl contracted measles after traveling out-of-state, making her the fifth case reported in Michigan this year. Officials said exposure sites in Lansing included events in early April and urged residents to update their MMR vaccines—CDC confirmed two measles-related deaths so far.  WJIM AM
