Good morning, Lansing. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 10th of June.

CRIME NEWS

  • The Michigan State Police Jackson Post issued a scam alert after receiving reports that texts claiming to be from the Michigan DMV threaten to suspend driver’s licenses if a fraudulent fine is not paid — the messages falsely state that records of missed payments will lead to legal action and include a link to a fake website — and officials warned recipients to delete the texts and not share personal information.  WLNS
  • Lansing Police identified Marvin High Jr., 58, as the man fatally shot at about 5:38 p.m. Sunday at the 3300 block of Bardaville Street off North Grand River Avenue east of Waverly Road—no arrests have been made.  Lansing State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Juneteenth is a federal—state holiday that marks the end of slavery and will be observed on June 19 with closures of government offices and banks. Parades—festivals and community events across the state will offer reflections and celebrations of the historic freedom declared in 1865.  Lansing State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Professor David Ortega at MSU studied 143 bills from 34 states that aim to limit foreign ownership of farmland. His research shows that lawmakers act more from national security concerns and political views than from economic reasons—findings that may guide future policy decisions.  Michigan State University Today

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A 65-year-old Lansing woman became a first-time homeowner in May using Ingham County's down payment assistance program (which offers up to $30,000 in aid) funded by a $15 million state grant. The program favors first-generation buyers and single-person households with incomes below $56,480 (helping make homeownership attainable at any age).  FOX 47
