CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Leslie Buck, 26, pleaded guilty on June 11 to eight felony charges for fraudulently filing Michigan state grant applications — including seven counts of perjury and one count of using a computer to commit a crime — and he will be sentenced on July 23 before Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Wanda Stokes. - ➤ Lansing’s Riverfront Plaza at the Lansing Center will host the free, family-friendly Grand Concert Series from July 17 through September 4 on select Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. The event will feature regional musical acts performing genres such as jazz, soul, funk, Motown, rock, folk, R&B, country, and classic rock — organizers say it will boost community engagement and support local businesses. - ➤ Michigan State University trustees approved the $3.69 billion operating budget for fiscal year 2025-26, which sets a 4.5% tuition increase for full-time students and implements a 9% general fund cut over two years to address financial challenges. The board also confirmed new leadership appointments—such as a provost who starts on Aug. 4 and a vice president of athletics beginning the week of June 16—and approved plans to merge academic units and create a First-Gen Center. - ➤ Michigan State University hosted its 2025 AI Summit on May 7 at the STEM Teaching and Learning Facility with over 300 staff and 100 online participants discussing ethical and responsible AI use. - ➤ Advocates for eliminating the lower minimum wage for tipped workers announced a referendum campaign to repeal Michigan's new minimum wage law—signed by Gov. Whitmer in February. - ➤ MSU’s Board of Trustees approved the hiring of new athletic director J Batt on Friday, June 13+ he will begin his role on Tuesday with a six-year contract that runs from July 17 to June 30, 2031.
