COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A homeless encampment caught fire in Lansing, drawing attention to issues that left 2,371 residents unhoused in 2023 and raised calls for better mental health support. Randy Barton of City Rescue Mission said a shelter expansion on Kalamazoo St.—which will double spaces for men and women and expand the overnight drop-in center—will finish in the next two to three weeks, with some men moving in this summer and women in the fall.  WLNS

CRIME NEWS

  • The Ingham County Sheriff’s Office investigated the embezzlement of up to $180,000 from the Webberville Junior Athletic Association after nearly empty accounts were discovered in May, finding that former treasurer Tiffany West admitted stealing funds over five years—leaving the organization without money for sports programs and prompting fundraising as the investigation continues.  Lansing City Pulse

  • Michigan State University guitarist Randy Napoleon in his first year as artistic director kicked off the Summer Solstice Jazz Festival with a ticketed fundraiser at Beggar’s Banquet today—free performances by local and national jazz artists will follow on Friday and Saturday.  Lansing City Pulse
  • Bonnie Knutson, a business professor at MSU and longtime supporter of the Wharton Center for Performing Arts, was awarded the 2025 Star of Touring Broadway Award at a June 9 Wharton Advisory Council meeting for her work in bringing Broadway productions to mid-Michigan—she has served on the council for 20 years and her endowment supports musical theater programs.  Lansing City Pulse
  • Local theaters and colleges will host a variety of summer events that bring comedy, Shakespeare, and music to the Lansing community. Williamston Theatre will present the Michigan premiere of 'Incident at Our Lady of Perpetual Help' from June 26 to Aug 3 with previews and talkbacks scheduled, Lansing Community College will stage a free outdoor production of 'A Midsummer Night’s Dream' from June 25 to 29, and MSU’s College of Music will kick off the Music in the Garden series at Beal Botanical Garden on June 29—followed by carillon concerts from July 2 to Aug 6.  Lansing State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • House Speaker Hall and Senate Majority Leader Brinks are meeting today in Lansing to discuss the FY 2026 state budget—both leaders stressed the need for progress on K-12 education funding, with Hall aiming to pass the budget by July 1 while a Senate subcommittee chairman criticized him as a hurdle. The meeting will focus on forging a plan that addresses state education priorities amid ongoing budget negotiations.  Stacks 92.1
  • Legislation introduced in Lansing would protect Michigan college athletes from interference with their rights to earn money from name, image, and likeness deals—lawmaker Joe Tate said the proposal follows a national settlement that awarded back pay and set up revenue sharing—and critics worry a new commission may cost athletes millions.  WKAR
  • Delta Township officials plan to impose a 1.5-mill special assessment—costing about $150 per $100,000 of taxable value—to fund a tentative deal with Eaton County that will secure police services; public hearings will be held in August and September before the assessment appears on winter tax bills.  Lansing State Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Michigan recorded its lowest infant mortality rate in history—6.1 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2023, down from 6.3 last year when there were 650 infant deaths. MDHHS officials said state programs and partnerships helped improve the health of moms and babies.  WLNS
