ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters from the St. Johns, Dallas Township and Elsie fire departments battled a motel fire at 1212 N. Business 27 on Saturday, June 22 at 3:30 p.m. as high heat, humidity and strong winds caused the blaze to spread quickly — severely damaging the single-story structure.  Lansing State Journal

  • In St. Johns, lifeguard instructor Becky Kay trained students at the local high school who saved lives, including recent graduate Josh Fromson who rescued a drowning person in the Dominican Republic earlier this year—water safety experts stress swimming safely by knowing limits. Families enjoying Motz Park are reminded to follow these guidelines as summer heats up.  FOX 47

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Michigan hunters reported harvesting nearly 280,000 deer in 2024, but the Department of Natural Resources estimates the actual total was closer to 373,000—reflecting a nearly 25% gap in the reports. The largest discrepancies were seen in the Upper Peninsula and Northern Lower Michigan.  WJIM AM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, as temperatures soar into the 90s and Lansing is under a code red for extreme heat, several cooling centers are open, including East Lansing’s Hannah Community Center, Lansing City Hall, and East Lansing Public Library — offering residents a safe spot to cool down. Officials say the centers will remain available until Tuesday — and more locations may open if the heat continues.  FOX 47

  • Michigan’s Department of Health and Human Services is sharing gun safety resources during National Gun Violence Awareness Month to help families stay safe—free gun locks are available at county offices and through local police partners while supplies last.  WLNS
