COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of East Lansing and its partners launched One Grand Read to unite residents through shared reading of 'Better Living Through Birding' and a series of free events running through September. The initiative will feature a special visit by author Christian Cooper at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20 at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center — offering a chance for locals to connect with nature and one another.  City of East Lansing

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Green Door, a long-beloved venue on East Michigan Avenue, is for sale as owners Jen Costigan and Jon Woolston seek a buyer to preserve its legacy. After June 28, the venue will stop live music on Fridays and Saturdays but will remain open on Thursdays — a change marking a new chapter for the iconic space.  Lansing State Journal
  • On June 23, C&S Wholesale Grocers announced it will acquire the Michigan based company SpartanNash for $1.77 billion—pending shareholder and regulatory approvals, the merger is expected to close in late 2025. The deal will combine the companies' resources to help independent grocery retailers compete.  Lansing State Journal

  • A new guide for 4th of July events in Michigan details 49 fireworks displays and shares tips to help residents pick clear viewing spots and park safely. The guide advises arriving early and following proper etiquette — key steps to enjoy the celebrations without blocked views.  WJIM AM
  • Sandra Seaton is an award-winning playwright and librettist whose works have been shown at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center and LA Opera. She began her career at MSU as a student and advisor—an experience that built a strong base for her work in theater, and her solo play Sally will run at the Wharton Center in February.  Michigan State University Today

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gov. Whitmer announced Tuesday that TORC Robotics and Pro Services will invest about $18 million in Michigan and add around 750 new jobs, with TORC Robotics building an engineering center in Ann Arbor Township and Pro Services growing their work in Portage — TORC jobs are expected to pay about $177,000 a year and Pro Services positions start at $28.07 an hour plus benefits — which will boost Michigan's job market.  WLNS

  • Spartan students at MSU are making a difference—studying the water mafia in Karachi and earning awards at the spring research forum that highlighted their local research. They also partnered with local communities to improve trails and launched Keep Lansing Warm to help homeless residents.  Michigan State University Today

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Scientists report that whitefish in the Great Lakes are near collapse due to quagga mussels filtering away the plankton young fish need to survive—local fishing businesses are already feeling the economic impact. Efforts to control the mussels continue, but experts fear there may be little time to save this iconic species.  WKAR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lansing drivers saw fewer detours on Monday when the Michigan Department of Transportation reopened ramps on US127 to westbound and eastbound I96 in south Lansing—other ramps remain closed and will reopen later this month.  Stacks 92.1

HEALTH NEWS

  • 6 News on Parenting Connection Tuesday offered parents guidance on recognizing signs of heat exhaustion such as heavy sweating, increased thirst, muscle cramps, headache, fainting, and vomiting— and signs of heat stroke like a dangerously high body temperature, severe headache, confusion, rapid heartbeat, nausea with vomiting or diarrhea, and seizures. Doctors advised that if a child shows these signs, parents should move them indoors and cool them quickly with cold towels or a bath to prevent serious harm.  WLNS
