CRIME NEWS

  • A 15-year-old boy was shot in the leg on June 29 on West Willow Street in north Lansing and was treated at University of Michigan Health—Sparrow Lansing as police continue to search for a suspect they believe is around the same age.  Lansing State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Dagwood’s Tavern & Grill in East Lansing was established in 1947 and named after a comic character when its owner chose a memorable name to avoid confusion—earning the spot as the only licensed bar during a 35-year dry period. Revived around 2000 by Mark & Marji Cheadle, the historic bar remains a local favorite known for its sports memorabilia and friendly service.  WJIM AM

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Residents in Lansing are finding new ways to earn extra cash before the Fourth of July holiday as can returns hit a 30-year low at about 70 percent. One resident relies on returning cans to stretch budgets—while another builds a flexible pet sitting service to help meet rising expenses.  FOX 47
  • Gas prices in Michigan are down three cents to $3.26 a gallon today after reaching a peak of $3.32 last week—Lansing has the highest price at $3.30. In southwest Michigan, prices range from $3.20 in Van Buren County to $3.35 in Barry County.  Stacks 92.1

EDUCATION NEWS

  • WKAR’s Director of Education—Robin Pizzo—advised parents today to let children choose books for pleasure during summer break and to use themed activities to reinforce reading, noting that picking their own stories helps foster lifelong interest in reading.  WKAR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan officials warn drivers that using handheld devices at red lights may break the distracted driving law and lead to fines of $100 to $250 along with 16 to 24 hours of community service - repeat offenders must complete a driving improvement course. Enforcement applies even when devices are mounted, so drivers must use only a single touch when operating them.  WJIM AM
  • Today, the City of East Lansing begins new security measures at City Hall—neighbors must enter through the southwest entrance and pass a metal detector. Westbound Miller Road will see a lane shift for sewer repairs from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m., and residents can set off fireworks on private property from June 29th to July 4th and on Saturday, July 5th.  FOX 47
