CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Local residents and MSU students gathered at Beal Botanical Garden on Sunday for the tenth annual Music and the Garden event that showed how surplus sheet music was turned into seed bombs through creative hands-on workshops—led by a recent MSU graduate. The event also featured live music by the Moderno Trio and displays from community groups that highlighted local plant initiatives and new recipes set to debut this fall. The State News

- ➤ Michigan State University will not adjust its tuition rates for the 2025–26 academic year because the board-approved 4.5% increase meets the state cap—undergraduate in-state rates now range from $8,458 to $9,642 while nonresident and graduate rates are set higher and fees may vary with course loads. The State News

- ➤ Today, fire inspector Braiden Hurt from the Lansing Fire Department advises residents to keep a bucket of water close, light only one firework at a time without trying to relight dud ones, and wait 20 minutes to soak spent fireworks for safety. He also warns against drinking when lighting fireworks, reminds people to use ear protection, and says sparklers burn very hot—pets should be kept indoors. WLNS
- ➤ Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is urging residents to learn the signs of human trafficking as summer travel increases; she said victims may show bruises, lack control over their money or documents, & urged anyone who suspects abuse to call the National Human Trafficking Resource Center at 888-373-7888 or text 233733. - ➤ The Michigan Department of Corrections reported a record low 21% reoffense rate for parolees with 79% not returning to prison, crediting evidence-based programs — including support for housing, recovery resources and job placement — for the success. MDOC will seek increased funding for these programs in fiscal year 2026. WLNS
- ➤ Federal records show that Enbridge swapped land with Emmet County in December, paying $1.5 million and giving up a parcel important to Odawa tribes that was later paved over for a parking lot. Tribal leaders said they learned of the deal a year later and feared the rushed review skipped federal safeguards meant to protect cultural sites—further fueling concerns about Indigenous consultation.
