BUSINESS NEWS

  • Gage Cannabis will close 20 dispensaries and four grow operations in Michigan by September, which will cut about 250 jobs from the state. The company said it is leaving Michigan to focus on markets like New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Ohio — aiming for better returns.  WJIM AM
  • Costco announced it has recalled several household items sold in Michigan, including window air conditioners prone to mold, tires at risk for detachment, adjustable dumbbells with loose weight plates, and power banks with battery overheating concerns+ Michigan customers are urged to stop using these products immediately and return them for a full refund at their local store.  WJIM AM
  • Walmart announced a recall of 850,000 Ozark Trail 64-oz insulated water bottles sold in Michigan since 2017 after defective lids — which may explode when storing liquid — injured users and caused one permanent vision loss.   • The FBI has warned Michigan residents that scammers pose as savvy investors to promote fake stock trading groups and trick people into buying stocks of low value—then sell their shares and vanish, leaving victims with worthless investments.  WJIM AM
  • The Michigan Supreme Court ruled on July 12 that Jennifer Crumbley must remain in prison as her request for bond was denied—upholding the lower court decision on her involuntary manslaughter convictions linked to the Oxford High School shooting.  WKAR

CULTURE NEWS

  • ScrapFest returned to Old Town Lansing this weekend with teams collecting up to 500 pounds of scrap metal to create nearly 50 sculptures for the free festival. The annual event featured live entertainment, vendors, and food trucks—proceeds benefiting the local Old Town Commercial Association—attracting thousands from Lansing and nearby.  WJIM AM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan law now restricts legal fireworks use to set days including the weekends before Memorial and Labor Day, June 29 to July 4, if July 5 falls on a Friday or Saturday, and December 31 until 1 am on January 1—fireworks are allowed only between 11 am and 11:45 pm. Violating these rules may lead to fines up to $1,000 and some local areas enforce extra restrictions.  WJIM AM

  • Orkin’s 2025 Top 50 Bed Bug Cities List shows four Michigan cities ranked among the worst—Detroit at No. 3, Grand Rapids at No. 7, Flint at No. 16, and Lansing at No. 48.
