- ➤ The Great Lakes Maritime careers page says Michigan has job openings for sailors who earn a median wage of $66,490 and work a 60-days-on, 30-days-off schedule — numbers expected to grow as the U.S. shipboard workforce turns over. Lansing State Journal
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ MSU has cleaned and improved the Red Cedar River for learning and fun with help from campus volunteers and local groups—it has removed debris and invasive species over the past 18 months. - ➤ Three Ward 4 candidates for city council—Peter Spadafore, Heath Lowry and Zacharie Spurlock—will appear on the Aug. 5 primary ballot and discuss downtown apartment projects, remote work, and the city budget. - ➤ MSU researchers found that young athletes who focus on one sport get hurt more often and may need surgery. They advise cross-training for at least three months a year—adding other activities to help keep bodies safer in the long run. Michigan State University Today
REAL ESTATE NEWS
- ➤ The Gillespie Group, a Lansing real estate firm, is planning to buy the soon-to-be empty space formerly used by the City Rescue Mission. The group intends to acquire five buildings along East Michigan Ave+spanning more than 16,500 square feet and will seek the needed approvals to finalize the purchase in August. WLNS
- ➤ The Gillespie Group plans to purchase six historic City Rescue Mission buildings—located near Jackson Field in the Stadium District—and spend $8M to redevelop them into restaurant and retail spaces on the first floors and up to 16 apartments above. The sale, which could be finalized in August, will lead to construction starting in October if approved by City Council in late July. Lansing State Journal
