CRIME NEWS

  • Bath Township police reported a home invasion on July 12 involving a stabbing and hostage situation was referred to the Michigan Attorney General's Office for prosecution—Prosecutor Tony Spagnuolo recused himself due to a personal connection.  FOX 47

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Johns Public Schools is considering three options for Eureka Elementary after enrollment in kindergarten and first grade has grown modestly from nine to 14 and 10 students respectively—either combining the grades into one class, moving the students to Gateway Elementary, or continuing with smaller classes. A board meeting will be held on July 31 to decide on the future of these grades amid concerns over declining local birth rates.  Lansing State Journal
  • MSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine became the first osteopathic school selected for the NIH Medical Scientist Training Program, marking a historic milestone in dual-degree medical education.   • Recent reports show that $1.7 trillion sits in unclaimed 401(k) accounts with an average balance of about $56,000—money Michigan residents might claim by checking online records and contacting former employers.   • An Olivet homeowner—Jim Billig—received two drain assessments totaling about $40K and is urging changes to the Drain Code so residents have more control over drainage projects. He contacts state representatives daily as county officials explore ways to reduce heavy costs on property owners.  FOX 47
  • U.S. and Michigan flags fly at half-staff today to honor U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Saul Gonzalez of Pullman who died in Erbil, Iraq a month ago during Operation Inherent Reserve. Governor Gretchen Whitmer lowered the flags in coordination with his family to mark the one-month anniversary of his death.  Stacks 92.1
  • Michigan state parks will raise fees for modern and semi-modern campsites and overnight lodging on Aug. 1 with increases of $4 to $10 per night and lodging rates from $60 to $160 — many parks are also planning temporary campground closures for system upgrades while rustic sites remain unchanged. Several parks in areas such as Crystal Falls, Cheboygan, and Traverse City will see closures for planned renovations to improve facilities.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan partnered with Undue Medical Debt to erase over $144 million in medical debt for more than 200,000 residents; forgiveness letters will be mailed by month’s end. Governor Whitmer said the program may expand—state officials continue work on the budget and road repair plans.  WKAR

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, the Ingham County Health Department advised residents to safely capture any bat entering a home using a container or fishing net—avoiding direct contact—and then take it to the local health department for rabies testing.
