  • Today, the Capitol Lawn Farmers Market celebrates its 20th anniversary with 60 Michigan vendors and live music by the Lansing Symphony Orchestra — it accepts SNAP Bridge Cards and Double Up Food Bucks. The event ends at 2 p.m. and will return on August 26 and September 23.  WLNS

CRIME NEWS

  • Two teens have been charged after a 26 year old man was shot in the arm during a Saturday robbery in Lansing, with a 16 year old facing charges of assault with intent to commit great bodily harm (to be tried as an adult) and a 17 year old charged with carrying a concealed weapon while police search for a third suspect as the victim remains stable after treatment at a nearby hospital near S. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. and Pierce Rd.  WLNS
  • After a violent weekend with four shootings in Lansing, community groups Advanced Peace and Mikey23 Foundation worked with police at shooting sites and hospitals — supporting victims and urging adults to open new dialogues with youth to break the cycle of gun violence.  FOX 47

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Energy experts advise residents to set their thermostats to 78 degrees and raise the setting when away as temperatures are expected to hit the mid to upper 90s this week in Michigan. DTE Energy notes that each degree increased can save 1% to 3% on electric bills—while they also recommend regular AC maintenance with monthly filter changes and clear airflow around outdoor units.  Lansing State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan State Police updated the red bubble light in 2023 with a design from SoundOff Signal—this change made the light 3 inches shorter and nearly 50% brighter with 144 LEDs, allowing drivers to spot cruisers sooner.  WJIM AM
  • Nearly 48,000 Michiganders have received $34 million in retroactive unemployment payments after more than 78,000 claims were reviewed for increased weekly benefits under Public Act 173 of 2024 — state officials said the extra funds have helped many pay their bills and feed their families.  Lansing State Journal
  • Today, Lansing officials have activated their Code Red Extreme Weather Plan as temperatures are expected to reach the high 80s to low 90s over the next few days. The city has opened four cooling centers along with library branches, a transit center & a pool to help residents beat the heat.  WLNS
  • State Representative Angela Witwer met with Eaton County resident Jim Billig today to address his concerns over drain project assessments ranging from $7,000 to $200,000 that affect thousands amid aging drainage systems. Witwer said the approval process needs reform to give residents more input + Billig said he will continue advocating for change regardless of his personal financial outcome.  FOX 47
