COMMUNITY NEWS

  • At the Ingham County Fair in Mason on July 28th, children and families met cows, horses, and sheep during a very hot day. Fair workers sprayed water on the animals to keep them cool— a brief rainstorm also gave some relief.  Lansing State Journal
  • Exhibitors at Ingham County Fair in Mason took extra steps Monday to cool show animals by spraying horses and using ice-cold blankets on sheep—cooler weather will arrive today as the fair continues through August 2.  Lansing State Journal
  • Ingham County officials have begun converting older housing into nearly 300 affordable units in Lansing, East Lansing and Old Town using funds from a millage approved last November — income-qualified buyers can also get up to $30,000 in down payment assistance on homes around $150,000.  FOX 47

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Meridian Township police said they responded to the 2300 block of Haslett Road at 5:30 p.m. on July 28 after a woman was struck by a vehicle + the driver was uninjured while she was taken to a Lansing area hospital.  Lansing State Journal

  • Lansing Duckpin will open August 8 in the Red Cedar development off East Michigan Avenue and will have nine lanes for duckpin bowling along with video games and group event packages — patrons can reserve lanes in advance and buy alcohol, but food will not be served.  WJIM AM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A census by the Michigan DNR shows the Kirtland’s warbler nesting pairs dropped by more than 30% since 2021—linked to a shortage of young jack pine forests for nesting. The department is working with the U.S. Forest Service to plant new trees, though it will take time for them to reach the right age.  Michigan Public Radio

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Voters in mid-Michigan will choose on millage measures for parks, recreation and community projects on August 5—while Lansing holds a primary to narrow five mayoral candidates for the general election.  WKAR
  • At Monday night’s City Council meeting, Lansing residents harshly criticized city officials for the plan to clear an unhoused encampment near Old Town—warning that the move would further displace vulnerable neighbors. The city filed a lawsuit last week to allow the clearance—and a hearing is set for Aug. 13 in Ingham County Circuit Court.  WKAR
