- ➤ Tashawn Bernard, a 14-year-old from Lansing, is suing the city, former police chief Ellery Sosebee and two officers for 11 counts including false arrest and excessive force after a 2023 incident that was captured in a viral video—his lawsuit filed July 27 claims his constitutional rights were violated due to inadequate training and supervision. - ➤ Late on Aug. 1, Meridian Township police arrested a suspect after a foot chase that led to two break-ins at occupied homes—he sustained minor injuries during the arrest, was treated, and is now in jail. Lansing State Journal

- ➤ Michigan State University Extension will lay off 94 employees and end its SNAP-Ed program on Oct. 1 due to federal funding cuts under the Big Beautiful Bill signed on July 4 — a grant worth more than 10 million dollars that for 30 years helped low-income families learn about healthy eating and physical activity will be lost. - ➤ In May, Ingham County Judge Richard Garcia ruled that pigs on Ted Nugent’s ranch are domestic after a DNR undercover probe sought evidence of illegal feral swine hunts at several game farms. - ➤ Metal fragments were found in fully cooked frozen ground beef, leading to a recall of 1,065 pounds of Ada Valley products sold in Michigan, California, Delaware, Illinois, and Pennsylvania. Consumers with packages marked with lot codes 35156 or 35157 and pack dates May 28 and May 30 should discard the products or return them for a full refund — the recall was initiated after the company alerted USDA's FSIS.
