EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ The new Mt. Hope School in Lansing was built with $30 million from a 2022 bond and replaced a 74-year-old school on Mt. Hope Avenue. The one-story building has modern features such as flexible seating, reading nooks (blue alcoves), automatic door locks, a secure entrance, and outdoor classrooms (with a basketball court) inside a fenced area. - ➤ The Lansing State Journal reported that more than 40 school districts have set start dates for the new school year. Dates range from Thursday, Aug. 14 for Potterville Public Schools and Lansing Catholic High School freshmen through Wednesday, Aug. 27 for Fowler Public Schools—details show a spread of start times in late August. - ➤ Michigan's confidential student safety tip line OK2SAY took in 20% more tips in 2024 over 2023, with over 11,000 reports in 25 categories+ bullying was reported 2,005 times and suicide 1,608 times, prompting 343 schools to conduct assessments. Stacks 92.1
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lansing Mayor Andy Schor secured his spot on the November ballot for a third term after topping Tuesday's primary with 9,230 votes while challenger Kelsea Hector received 2,312 votes. Schor — who has led the city since 2018 — said his priorities for a third term include economic development, housing, public safety, and improvements to roads and sidewalks. Michigan Public Radio
- ➤ On Aug. 5, almost 12,600 voters cast ballots by 3 p.m. in Lansing's mayoral primary election—putting the city on track to beat its 2005 record as reported by Lansing Clerk Chris Swope. Fewer than 1,000 voters cast ballots in person while over 11,400 absentee votes were counted, and polls closed at 8 p.m. Lansing State Journal
- ➤ The U.S. Department of Justice republished a list of sanctuary jurisdictions on August 5 that names East Lansing after the city voted in 2023 to limit police cooperation with federal immigration law enforcement. Attorney General Pamela Bondi said the department will continue litigation—working with the Department of Homeland Security to end these policies. WKAR
