BUSINESS NEWS

  • UAW president Shawn Fain faced an investigation after a court-appointed monitor alleged misconduct and six union locals—four from Michigan—requested an internal trial over financial issues. The review remains ongoing and may lead to a reprimand or removal if approved by the monitor.  Michigan Public Radio

CULTURE NEWS

  • Bare Bones Improv will return to Riverwalk Theatre this weekend with shows held at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday (18+ audience) and a family-friendly matinee at 2 p.m. on Sunday. The group, which debuted in April and has since opened for Detroit’s Ants in the Hall, practices on Tuesdays and continues to grow its supportive community.  Lansing City Pulse

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Michigan State University is tearing down the old Central Services Building near Spartan Stadium across from Wells Hall; the work started in late June and will continue through September—this project will cut maintenance costs after Transportation Services moved to a new building.  Lansing State Journal
  • MSU film studies professor Peter Johnston fulfilled his childhood dream by competing on Jeopardy and advanced through audition rounds before flying to LA in April. His episode aired on July 15—he said the experience was a blast despite facing tough competition.  The State News
  • Bath Township voters approved a nearly $27 million school bond proposal that will fund new roofs, intruder alarms and heating upgrades at all local schools—Bath Community Schools will now sell bonds and complete the projects within two years.  FOX 47

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lansing voters cast nearly 25,000 ballots in yesterday’s mayoral primary where incumbent Mayor Andy Schor earned 63.38% and Kelsea Hector earned 15.88%—so Hector will challenge him in November. In addition, grassroots candidate Julie Vandenboom led the at-large City Council contest and a parks millage passed by 73%—while a water franchise agreement proposal failed.  Lansing City Pulse
  • On Sunday, August 3 the city installed three speed humps on Clemens Avenue (between Michigan Avenue and Kalamazoo Street) to slow speeding drivers. The project met strict criteria (including a petition and approvals from police and city council) before the road reopened to traffic.  WJIM AM
  • Incumbent Mayor Andy Schor and Punks with Lunch Lansing Executive Director Kelsea Hector advanced to the general election after Tuesday's primary, with Schor earning over 60% of the vote and Hector 15.8%. Candidates for City Council also advanced, with four at-large and two Fourth Ward contenders set to face voters on Nov. 4+.  WKAR
