CRIME NEWS

  • Andrial Ortiz, 30, faces 17 felony counts for resisting arrest, disarming police and shooting an officer after a traffic stop at an apartment complex in south Lansing on April 10, 2024 — the state Attorney General cleared the officer while Ortiz was arraigned on Aug. 8 on a $100,000 bond and his federal trial is set for Sept. 16.  Lansing State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, Michigan State University hosts the semifinals of the inaugural Ralph Votapek International Young Artist Competition in the MSU Music Building’s Cook Recital Hall, where ten young pianists from the U.S., Canada and China will perform for a share of over $10,000 in prize money. Masterclasses for non-advancing semifinalists occur Saturday at 1 p.m. and finals take place Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m.—the public is invited to attend all free events.  WKAR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Michigan State University scientists have debunked claims that an interstellar comet called 3I/Atlas is a UFO — they confirm it shows natural cometary activity and a unique ice composition. The comet will be observable with telescopes in August, September, November and December.  WKAR
  • Educators gathered in Lansing on Thursday at Lansing Community College for a professional development day focused on addressing antisemitism in schools and guiding teachers through sensitive conversations using clear strategies—experts like Dr. Rachel Fish and Dr. Michael Rice stressed that turning 'don’t knows' into 'knows' can help students build trust.  FOX 47
  • MSU's Board of Trustees will consider a $3 million memorial in a special Zoom session at 8:00 a.m. today to honor those affected by the February 13th, 2023 mass shooting; the design, chosen by a committee from three proposals, will replace the Old Horticulture Gardens fountain off Farm Lane with a reflective pond—granite stones and seasonal plantings. Funding will come from Spartan Strong funds and capital reserves.  Lansing State Journal

  • Potter Park Zoo in Lansing announced on Thursday that a red panda cub was born on July 5 to parents Maliha and Deagan-Reid—marking the zoo’s fifth litter for these endangered animals. The cub and its mother remain healthy in an off-exhibit area as animal care teams monitor their progress while visitors view Deagan-Reid in the habitat.  WKAR
