  • Mark Nixon, a longtime newspaper writer known for his witty and kind reporting, died on Aug. 14 due to a heart condition at 76 and is remembered for his work on the He Ate—She Ate column at the Lansing State Journal.   • A Lansing neighbor hosted a free backpack drive at Once Upon a Child yesterday to help students prepare for school, providing over 100 backpacks with half taken in the first 20 minutes. Jenna Nichols, who began the drive in 2020 with six backpacks, plans an even bigger drive next year—supporting local families in need.  FOX 47

  • Lansing father Jerome Ezell—who vanished on November 7, 2017 after dropping off his girlfriend—was found dead on December 12, 2018 near Van Buren County, and the FBI offers a $10,000 reward for tips to help solve his unresolved homicide.  WJIM AM
  • The FBI warned Michigan residents of a new package scam where unwanted parcels arrive with a QR code that requests personal and financial information—this brush scam aims to boost product reviews.  WJIM AM

CULTURE NEWS

  • Residents can tour Lansing’s historic Gilded Age buildings—including the Michigan State Capitol known for its carved doorways and classic design—to see 19th-century craftsmanship. The Capitol is open for tours today and through the week, letting locals explore the city’s iconic architecture.  WJIM AM

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan DNR warns that golden oyster mushrooms from Asia are growing wild in Michigan forests and reducing native fungi that break down wood—raising concerns over forest health. Residents are told to keep grow kits indoors and report any wild mushrooms.  WJIM AM

  • Michigan State football is in its final week of camp as players compete for starting roles ahead of the Aug. 29 home opener against Western Michigan at 7 p.m. on FS1—coaches say scrimmages and practice will decide the lineup for key positions.  Lansing State Journal
