ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A car and a semi truck collided on M-52 south of Webberville at the East Howell Road intersection about 7:40 a.m. Aug. 18 and one person died—M-52 was closed near the crash.  Lansing State Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Rathbun Insurance has placed two new billboards in Lansing to offer translation services in 11 languages—Mandarin, Kinyarwanda, Swahili, Burmese, and more—to help non-English speakers understand insurance options. The company works with 7C Lingo for human translation based on Michigan State University data so locals no longer rely on their children for complicated financial details.  Lansing State Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Michigan State University reached a $2.45 million settlement in July with Hanyang Tao—a survivor injured during the Feb. 13 shooting at Berkey Hall—as his spine was struck by bullet fragments, and he continues to suffer severe pain and stress after returning to China.  The State News
  • Ethan Cao's lawyer argues that charges under Michigan's anti-hazing law are unconstitutional due to insufficient evidence in the death of Phat Nguyen during a 2021 MSU fraternity pledge event—this appeal could change how future hazing cases are prosecuted.  The State News
  • Seven additional individuals have been charged with hazing resulting in death after MSU student Phat Nguyen died of alcohol intoxication in 2021 at a Pi Alpha Phi welcome event — charges coming after further investigation by East Lansing Police and the Ingham County Prosecutor.  The State News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lansing City Council is considering a proposal to end private garbage collection services and have the city serve all curbside trash needs—this plan would affect over half of the residents who use companies like Granger and Waste Management. The proposal was referred to the public safety committee on Aug. 11 and may lead to changes in trash rates and service options.  Lansing State Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Readers in Greater Lansing can vote until Aug. 22 to choose the best high school football venue—options include spots like DeWitt High with its fire-spitting scoreboard and Ithaca with its upgraded video board near the expressway. Voters can cast one vote per hour and should refresh their browser on mobile if the poll does not appear.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan State lost key kicker Jonathan Kim and now faces a tough start with two injured kickers while walk-on Blake Sislo fills in—special teams coach Chad Wilt said the team must be reliable. The long snapper Kaden Schickel is recovering from a knee injury and should return for the season opener against Western Michigan at 7 p.m. on FS1.  Lansing State Journal
  • Reigning champions were picked by fans to win league titles—DeWitt was favored in the CAAC Blue, Mason in the CAAC Red, Portland in the CAAC White, and Pewamo-Westphalia in the CMAC. DeWitt and Portland led the vote with 56.0% and 62.2% while Mason and Pewamo-Westphalia received 35.5% and 42.6%.  Lansing State Journal
