COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today the annual Farmers Market takes place on the State Capitol lawn and offers fresh fruits, vegetables, baked goods, syrup, honey, jam and flowers while food trucks serve shoppers from 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Presented by the Michigan Farmers Market Association, the event accepts SNAP Bridge Cards, Double Up Food Bucks and Senior Market FRESH to help local residents buy produce.  Stacks 92.1

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Donald and Trusnovec sued Downtown Lansing Inc. after officials promised a $25,000 grant to help move their plant shop downtown but the funds never came, forcing the store to close in March 2024. They claim repeated assurances led them to spend their savings on relocation costs—resulting in severe financial loss.  Lansing State Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • In Lansing, homeowners are rushing to install solar panels before the 30% federal tax credit ends on December 31 so they can save money. Adam Phelps of Absolute Solar said inquiries have doubled+tripled since July and systems must be installed and turned on in two to three months to qualify.  WKAR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Michigan State University expanded its autonomous bus route to cover five miles on campus with stops including the Wharton Center, IM East, Anthony Hall, and Commuter Lot #89. The fully electric bus used advanced sensors + traffic light communication and allowed a driver to take control during campus construction.  WKAR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michiganders planning a Labor Day trip to the Upper Peninsula face drives up to 4½ hours when heading to the Mackinac Bridge from cities like Ann Arbor and Detroit. The bridge will close to vehicles from 6:30 a.m. to noon on Labor Day for its annual walk—drivers should plan their routes accordingly.  Lansing State Journal
  • The Michigan Secretary of State’s Office announced that overseas military and citizens will vote online this fall using a new Electronic Delivery and Return Portal available September 15. The portal was developed under the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act to cut delays from mailed absentee ballots — officials noted.  Stacks 92.1

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan State football will open the season this Friday night at Spartan Stadium — they will face Western Michigan with kickoff at 7:00 p.m. Campus officials warn heavy traffic is expected and advise faculty to leave by 1:00 p.m., and fans must dress in green for even-numbered sections and white for odd-numbered sections.  Stacks 92.1
  • Haslett senior and Kansas commit Kory Amachree spoke on August 18th about his return from injury and his plans for the senior season—he said his recovery has strengthened his readiness for upcoming games.  Lansing State Journal
