CULTURE NEWS

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Michigan beef prices have surged 12% in 2025 and experts warn that Labor Day cookout costs will remain high into next year due to a cattle shortage, drought, and rising feed, labor, and energy costs—factors that are putting extra pressure on shoppers.  WJIM AM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Michigan's third graders scored only 38.9% proficient in reading on the M-STEP released on Aug. 27, with more than 60% of students not reaching proficiency for the second year. • Barbara Roberts Mason, a trailblazing educator and the first Black woman elected statewide in Michigan, will celebrate her 85th birthday on Sunday at the University Club—she has dedicated her life to improving schools and civil rights.  Lansing City Pulse

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • After two FOIA requests, city officials sent a list on Aug. 20 showing 652 red-tagged properties—down by 17 from January; they say this decrease comes from filling vacant enforcement positions and property repairs. Some council members and opponents argue that while the drop is a positive sign, more proactive measures are needed to deal with unsafe housing.  Lansing City Pulse
  • On August 26, the GOP-controlled House approved a state budget plan that cuts spending across agencies such as the Michigan State Police and the Health Department — the plan adds $3.4 billion for local road repairs and saves nearly $4 billion compared to the governor's proposal. Negotiations will continue to finalize the plan before the fiscal year begins on October 1.  Lansing State Journal
  • Local advocates say the historic Preuss Building in Old Town, built in 1875, is at risk as other landmarks have been lost to neglect — and they urge Mayor Andy Schor to form a team to protect remaining structures. The group calls for a review of funding and strategies to help save Lansing’s precious history.  Lansing City Pulse
