COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Maguire Park in south Lansing sits at the junction of the Lansing River Trail, South Lansing Pathway and Delhi Township's Sycamore Trail—covering 12 acres with a modern playground, picnic tables, a pavilion and the Priority Health Fitness Court. Visitors enjoy direct trail access for walking, running and cycling.  Lansing State Journal
  • The City Rescue Mission of Lansing opened its new Single Adult Shelter at 415 W. Kalamazoo St. this week, moving its men’s services and Outreach Drop-in Center from Michigan Avenue. The donation center remains closed for renovations until mid-September — a step to improve service accessibility.  Stacks 92.1
  • The Lansing Potter Park Zoo euthanized Doppsee — an endangered female black rhino — last night after her health had declined over a month; zoo officials said they sent samples for testing and expect results in weeks.  FOX 47

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Better Aged MSU, a vintage store selling Michigan State gear over 20 years old, opened on August 28 on Grand River Avenue between Pitaya and Rocket Fizz. More than 30 students waited in the rain early in the morning to get special prizes and exclusive deals.  The State News

  • The MI Tri-Share Care program splits childcare costs equally among employers, employees, and the state to help Jackson workers save on weekly expenses—more than 250 centers statewide now participate and local providers note the program eases the burden on families.  FOX 47

HEALTH NEWS

  • The state's first case of eastern equine encephalitis was confirmed in an unvaccinated horse from Benzie County as the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development urged animal owners to protect their animals from mosquito bites — there have been six human cases of West Nile virus reported this year.  Stacks 92.1

SPORTS NEWS

  • Everett High School defeated Sexton 24—14 on Thursday evening in the season opener as fans gathered at Sexton to support the return of high school football. Teachers and parents said the game helped build unity and school pride in Lansing.  FOX 47
  • DeWitt’s Panthers held Haslett to 3 points in a season-opening game on August 28—showing their commitment to hard work and teamwork as they earned a 21—3 win. Lucas Brandell led the defense with an interception and nine tackles while Haslett’s main runner was limited to 81 yards on 17 carries.  Lansing State Journal
  • Greater Lansing high school football players shined in Week 1 as junior quarterback Joel Cranmore from Leslie passed for 308 yards with five touchdowns and added 71 rush yards in a 44–22 win over Stockbridge—senior Javari Funches from Everett rushed for 283 yards with four touchdowns in a 24–14 win over Sexton. LSJ reported additional strong stats from other players across the region, highlighting a competitive opening week.  Lansing State Journal
