COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ The City Rescue Mission opened phase one of its new shelter on 415 W. Kalamazoo St. and now houses its men’s services and Outreach Drop-in Center for unhoused individuals. Construction on phase two—set to double men's capacity to 200 and add a dorm for single women—will be completed by the end of the year. WKAR
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ A Forbes report ranked Lansing-area employers among Michigan’s best places to work — the survey based scores on wage parity, work culture and advancement opportunities. Auto-Owners Insurance, ranked 13th in Michigan, along with Peckham Inc., Michigan State University and the State of Michigan earned high marks from employees — showing strong workplace conditions. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Michigan Attorney General’s office named MEDC CEO Quentin Messer Jr. as a possible target of an embezzlement probe into state grant funds used for a business accelerator—search warrants were executed at MEDC's Lansing headquarters and a Farmington Hills residence, and Messer is cooperating with the investigation. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Michigan State University’s DOE Plant Research Laboratory named Federica Brandizzi as its new director, and her term began in August—she is a veteran professor who has led plant science research including sending seeds into space. Michigan State University Today
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Lansing officials approved buying 50 small housing pods—called ModPods—from a nonprofit in Kalamazoo to help people without homes, even though the pods will not be ready until about June and will cost taxpayers nearly $1.4 million in the first year. The city will begin seeking bids from service contractors in the next three weeks and host a community feedback session on Oct. 30 at the Foster Community Center. Bridge Michigan
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Lansing's new Community Mental Health Crisis Care Center is under construction at the former McLaren Hospital campus and is expected to open in summer 2026. The center will provide 24/7 crisis services (staffed by psychiatrists, therapists and nurses) to help reduce hospital emergency visits. FOX 47
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ In DeWitt, the Panthers held off Mason 44-37 in a hard-fought game—Traverse Moore led with 248 yards, three scores and a decisive 47-yard run while defensive plays by Brendan Mensing and Everett Cooper secured the win. Lansing State Journal
- ➤ No. 5 Notre Dame ended Michigan State's 17 game home winning streak by beating the Spartans 3 to 0 in East Lansing. The Spartans had early chances but could not score and will play Rutgers on Sept.12 in Big Ten play. Lansing State Journal
- ➤ Michigan State plays Boston College in football today at 7:36 p.m. ET at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing. The game will be on NBC as the Spartans come off a 23-6 win over Western Michigan and Boston College follows a 66-10 win over Fordham—MSU is a 4.5-point favorite in their eighth meeting.
