BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Amtrak announced that from September 15 to 19 its Blue Water route serving East Lansing and other stops will have schedule changes due to dismantling of coal towers — work that affects both Wolverine and Blue Water services. Charter buses will provide alternatives, but they will have limited capacity and longer wait times. Lansing State Journal
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Lansing police investigated a stabbing on Sept. 7 at 4:15 p.m. on South Cedar Street that left a 34-year-old man critically injured with a stab wound to the abdomen — two individuals were taken into custody. Lansing State Journal
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ MSU will host a free tribute concert on Sept. 14 at 3 p.m. at the Wharton Center’s Cobb Great Hall to honor former President Clifton Wharton and his wife, Dolores. The concert will feature renowned artists, students and faculty, spanning jazz, Broadway, dance and classical genres—to celebrate their lasting legacy in the performing arts. Lansing State Journal
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ MSU is using AI cameras at Heritage Commons at Landon Hall and The Edge at Akers Hall to snap pictures of leftover food—3-D models now measure waste since August 18. The system will help the university plan better portions and adjust recipes during the academic year. The State News
- ➤ Michigan third-grade reading scores remain at record lows statewide despite increased spending, while some districts are using better teacher training and a consistent curriculum—like Caledonia Community and Rockford—to improve proficiency; state leaders have invested millions in evidence-based methods that may take years to fully boost literacy. - ➤ Michigan Avenue construction near UM Health-Sparrow Lansing is moving forward—patients and visitors are urged to take alternate routes since one lane is open and delays are expected. The next phase will extend west to S. Pennsylvania Avenue from mid-September through mid-October while emergency services remain fully maintained. Stacks 92.1
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ As fall sets in, experts say that shorter days and lower energy may lead to seasonal depression in residents + they advise contacting health care providers for support. September is National Suicide Prevention Month and anyone in crisis should call or text 988. Lansing State Journal

- ➤ In Greater Lansing high school football week 2, Gibson Rondy of Ithaca rushed 21 times for 143 yards with three touchdowns and passed for 238 yards and two touchdowns in a 36-7 win over Lawton—helping the Yellowjackets in a Division 7 matchup. Portland St. Patrick earned team of the week honors by rallying in the fourth quarter to win 14-7 over Morrice and avenge last season’s playoff loss. Lansing State Journal
- ➤ Michigan State won a 42-40 double-overtime game against Boston College on Sept. 6 as QB Aidan Chiles threw four touchdown passes and WR Nick Marsh made a key 41-yard catch—while weak pass coverage allowed BC quarterback Dylan Lonergan to throw for 390 yards. Lansing State Journal
