COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, mid-Michigan marks the 9/11 anniversary with many memorial events to honor those lost in the terrorist attacks — Lansing hosts a ceremony at 8:30 a.m. at Wentworth Park and a wreath-laying at Evergreen Cemetery; the Michigan Capitol holds a ceremony at 10:28 a.m.; MSU organizes a sled push at 11:00 a.m.; Holt schedules a 9/11 Hero Run starting at 6:30 p.m.; and Jackson and Mason offer events including a blood drive and volunteer work for first responders.  Stacks 92.1
  • State employees from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity and Habitat for Humanity Capital Region worked on 9/11 Day of Service in Lansing to clear overgrown yards, erect a fence, and improve a community home on Ferguson Street. They used leave time through the LEO Gives Back program to add real change—ensuring safe spaces for local families.  WJIM AM

  • Students at Michigan State University gathered in front of Wells Hall on Thursday night to honor conservative commentator Charlie Kirk—who was shot at a Utah speaking event on Wednesday—and denounced online praise that overshadowed the loss of his life.  FOX 47

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On Thursday, MSU Athletic Director J Batt and University President Kevin Guskiewicz spoke at a panel with the Lansing Economic Club about how MSU athletics boosts the local economy — with football games drawing many visitors to local events.  FOX 47

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • More than 400 emergency vehicle technicians from around the world will gather in Lansing at the Lansing Center from September 21 to September 26 to learn fire truck maintenance—this training will help them keep emergency vehicles running in their communities.  FOX 47
  • Michigan senators held a committee hearing on Thursday to discuss a plan to expand the Amber alert system to include older and vulnerable adults—Senator Mallory McMorrow sponsored a bill and advocates said the measures could help bring missing individuals home safely while costing up to $20,000 annually.  WKAR
  • Brian Ball, the Delhi Township Fire Chief who was a young firefighter in Mason, drove to New York City on September 11 and spent five days at Ground Zero searching for survivors and collecting artifacts—his experience then still shapes his service today. He will lead the fire department’s annual 9/11 Hero Run later this evening—honoring those who lost their lives during the terrorist attack.  FOX 47

  • A national report by Realtor.com found that Lansing-East Lansing ranked No. 6 and Ann Arbor ranked No. 20 among the top 20 U.S. housing markets for summer home-buying—buyers have found affordable prices and fast sales that reflect strong local economic stability.  Lansing State Journal

  • Armorion Smith, a Michigan State senior safety, cares for his four younger siblings—balancing football, classes, and home duties—while managing his grief after his mother died last year. His local teammates support him as he meets these challenges on and off the field.  Lansing State Journal
  • Spartans kick returner Alante Brown has overcome injuries and a deep receiver room at Michigan State and turned heads with a 63—yard kickoff return that improved field position in a close win. He remains a key special teams player and will face Youngstown State Saturday at 3:30 p.m. as he pursues his NFL dream.  The State News
