COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Community organizations and local officials gathered at the old REO elementary school in South Lansing to host The Village Lansing’s inaugural block party—offering gun violence prevention resources and fun activities for local families on Saturday. The event featured a dunk tank fundraiser for a new youth boxing program while local leaders stressed the need to strengthen neighborhood bonds and safety. FOX 47
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Spirit Halloween will return this season to Lansing by taking over former stores—such as the old TJ Maxx on Saginaw Highway near Men's Warehouse and the previous Office Max at 446 Edgewood Blvd—and another pop-up will open at Meridian Mall in Okemos, showing that vacant retail spaces persist. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ MSU held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sept. 12 to mark the reopening of Campbell Hall after a $37 million renovation as it became a living-learning community for the Honors College—faculty, staff, students, donors and alumni attended the event while plans for future upgrades were set to move forward. - ➤ Waverly High School's class of 1975 spent a week building a Habitat for Humanity home as part of their 50-year reunion—celebrating at their alma mater on Friday. The home will be completed in May and a family will move in in June. FOX 47
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ MDOT said drivers in Lansing and Jackson will experience fewer delays when current US-127 detour projects end by November 15. The agency will start lane closures in spring 2026 and begin a major rebuild from 2027 through fall 2028—extending improvements along the corridor. WJIM AM
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Retired coach Mark Dantonio is serving on the 13-member College Football Playoff selection committee, where he watches Michigan State and other teams closely as they prepare for a December championship — he said he has increased his film study during retirement. He was recently honored in the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame — a busy year that highlights his continued influence on college football. Lansing State Journal
- ➤ MSU beat Youngstown State 41-24 on Saturday but saw key players injured including Nick Marsh who left with a suspected calf injury and Frazier hurt on a play—tight end Jack Velling tied his career high with six catches as the Spartans plan their adjustments for next week's game. - ➤ Michigan State women's soccer ended its Big Ten opener with a 1-1 tie at Rutgers as junior midfielder Bella Najera scored the Spartans' only goal — breaking a long goal drought. - ➤ A review of Week 3 high school football games in Greater Lansing shows top performers from area teams—Everett’s Javari Funches rushed 29 times for 232 yards and scored two touchdowns while Ithaca’s Greyson Merchant passed for 224 yards, ran for 48 yards and recorded three scores, and Owosso’s Braden Reed caught five passes for 129 yards before kicking the winning field goal.
