COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lansing neighbors gathered Sunday at Shaheen Chevrolet's 7th annual car show to support The Davies Project—an organization that gives free rides to families with sick kids. Forty trophies were awarded to the best vehicles as the community celebrated the event and its mission.  FOX 47

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hispanic Heritage Month runs from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 to honor Latino and Hispanic contributions in Michigan—local celebrations include a four-day festival in downtown Lansing from Sept. 18 to 21 with live Latin jazz, vendors, and dance classes. Officials and local organizers stress the cultural value of these events in celebrating diverse heritage.  Lansing State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The MSU Museum held a Harvest Moon Silent Disco at the Beal Botanical Gardens on September 5 as part of its new Unwind series for student wellness. The program—rebranded from First Fridays—will include a Move Your Way event on October 17 and a game night in November as the museum plans to reopen in January if all goes as expected.  The State News

  • Experts warn Michigan residents to be alert when hiking as poison hemlock, a toxic and invasive plant that looks like wild carrot, is spreading in woods and parks — all parts of the plant can cause dangerous symptoms if inhaled.  WJIM AM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • MDOT crews are starting several road projects statewide this week, including the closure of the I-96 off-ramp at Lansing Road (closed from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. today) as part of efforts to complete improvements before winter. Drivers near Lansing should plan alternate routes as similar work continues on other highways.  Lansing State Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • St. Johns Lions fans gathered at Ryan’s Roadhouse yesterday after the team beat the Chicago Bears, sparking renewed excitement across Mid-Michigan—bartender Jeff Falor noted the turnaround—and locals said the win marked a clear improvement from last week.  FOX 47
  • Michigan State football beat Youngstown State on Saturday but lost key players to injuries including wide receiver Nick Marsh, offensive lineman Luka Vincic and running back Makhi Frazier — the team will check their health ahead of the Big Ten opener against USC on Sept. 20 at LA Memorial Coliseum with a kickoff at 11 p.m.  Lansing State Journal
