EDUCATION NEWS

  • Michigan State University reported that international student enrollment dropped 3.8% from last fall, with numbers falling from 4,768 to 4,589, but the decline was milder than some experts had predicted—smaller schools saw larger drops while others expect growth. Further analysis will look into the varying enrollment trends across state institutions.  The State News
  • Lansing Head Start opened a new outdoor learning classroom that uses water elements and temperature activities to help students learn by exploring nature. Teachers plan to use the space year-round as an extension of indoor lessons in a growing trend in local education.  FOX 47
  • Michigan State University president Kevin Guskiewicz said he will work to keep civil discourse on campus this Fall amid heated debate over the Israel-Hamas war—he has already held respectful talks with student protesters and renewed panel discussions on antisemitism and Islamophobia. This approach comes as campus debates intensify while the election draws near.  The State News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lansing officials are pushing for more local control over liquor license approvals after a recent transfer on Pleasant Grove Road near schools and a youth center sparked concern—Mayor Andy Schor is working with state lawmakers to give locals a say in the process.  FOX 47
  • Today, East Lansing City Council will meet at 7 p.m. at the Hannah Community Center to look at changes to the police department and its oversight group. One plan would change the department’s leadership to use one deputy chief for operations and one assistant chief for strategy while council members may delay the oversight changes and decide on a document release; City Manager Robert Belleman will also get his contract renewed for three more years with a small pay raise.  WKAR

  • Michigan State University will hold a Big Ten blood drive at the Breslin Student Events Center on September 24th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. — the drive is part of a conference challenge to collect the most donations and offers parking in Lots 62, 63 and 79.  Stacks 92.1

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan State men’s basketball began practice on Monday when coach Tom Izzo named four returning starters as captains—Jeremy Fears Jr., Coen Carr, Jaxon Kohler and Carson Cooper—to lead the team for the upcoming 2025–26 season. He said the players have improved amid major roster changes, including NBA departures and new transfers.  The State News
  • MSU men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo began practice Monday for his 31st season — he welcomed his granddaughter Sophie and said he would not quit any time soon. He also praised freshman Cam Ward for his toughness and noted that point guard Jeremy Fears improved his vertical leap by five inches.  Lansing State Journal
  • Kory Amachree led Haslett to a 21-14 overtime win with 228 yards and two touchdowns—he scored the winning run that moved the team to 2-0 in the CAAC Red. DeWitt passed a tough test against a Galloway Westland squad with a 38-28 win, moving to 4-0 as they prepare for CAAC Blue matchups.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan State football will face Nebraska on Oct. 4 with a 4 p.m. kickoff on FS1—both teams come off early season losses and hold a bye this week. The game is set as the Spartans' second mid-afternoon start this season.  Lansing State Journal
