EDUCATION NEWS

  • MSU’s College Assistance Migrant Program did not receive federal funding last week for the upcoming fiscal year, leaving the program in financial uncertainty. University officials are exploring new funding options—such as donor support and internal allocations—and have reduced enrollment to bridge the gap for migrant students.  The State News
  • Holt Public Schools announced Friday that free breakfast and lunch will be provided to all students through the 2025-26 school year. District leaders said the move comes as state lawmakers work to finalize the budget for the fiscal year starting Oct. 1.  FOX 47

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Michigan will see its first full supermoon of 2025—known as the harvest moon—peak at 11:47 p.m. on Oct. 6, offering bright views for early October nights. Astronomers say residents should watch for clear skies to fully enjoy the moon's larger and lower appearance.  Lansing State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan State Police today launched a campaign called Opening the Door to help parents protect kids from online predators — urging families to discuss safety on social media, messaging apps, and gaming platforms while using resources like the CyberTipline. The initiative is designed to alert parents and children to digital risks and preventive measures.  WJIM AM
  • The new Michigan budget deal reached Sept. 25 will add more than $1.5 billion a year for road and bridge repairs by using a new 24% wholesale marijuana tax — redirecting corporate income tax funds and a 20‑cent per gallon fuel tax increase that keeps pump prices steady. House bills passed on Sept. 25 are expected to be finalized by the fiscal year’s end, paving the way for these changes.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan’s 50-year-old bottle deposit law has seen fewer returns since the COVID pandemic and lawmakers along with recycling advocates plan to update it to allow more types of bottles and easier return options. Retailers worry that new changes will add costs and more work—since return rates have dropped to about 70%, they say a new system may make shopping more expensive.  Michigan Public Radio

HEALTH NEWS

  • In 2024, 7,100 pedestrians died and more than 1,000 cyclists were hit each year, so safety experts advise Lansing walkers and bikers to use sidewalks, wear helmets correctly, and add bike lights at night — all to boost visibility and reduce accidents. They stress looking in all directions before crossing and avoiding distractions while on the road.  Michigan Public Radio
