CRIME NEWS

  • After a mass shooting at a church in Grand Blanc, Michigan faith leaders are consulting with security experts and reviewing safety protocols—while the Diocese of Lansing awaits investigation findings before deciding on changes.  FOX 47
  • Okemos High School was evacuated on Monday afternoon after a possible threat was reported, and students were taken to the stadium while Meridian Township Police investigated—subsequent checks confirmed no credible danger and after-school activities proceeded as scheduled.  FOX 47

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of Toronto professor Lambert Zuidervaart held a lecture at MSU’s South Kedzie Hall on Friday—he said political actions like funding cuts and lawsuits have challenged American universities. He urged the creation of public centers at schools to let citizens and scholars debate the future of scientific research.  The State News
  • MSU’s associate dean Supratik Rayamajhi is recommended to serve as interim dean of the College of Human Medicine effective October 1 pending Board approval, replacing Aron Sousa who stepped down earlier this month to lead a Chicago-based university. He will also join the council studying a potential merger of the College of Human Medicine and the College of Osteopathic Medicine—part of the One Team One Health plan amid operating budget cuts.  The State News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The FAA says it is against the law to shoot down a drone flying over a home in Michigan, and residents should call the police if they feel unsafe. Drone pilots must follow rules like keeping the drone in sight and having a valid registration or risk fines and charges.  Lansing State Journal
  • The Michigan Senate passed a budget transparency resolution Monday that requires lawmakers to disclose earmark details before adding them to the final budget. Lawmakers will continue to negotiate spending details—including proposals like a marijuana sales tax and state health department funding—as they work to meet the final budget deadline tomorrow.  WKAR

SPORTS NEWS

  • Candidates for LSJ girls high school athlete of the week are Remie Ellis of Eaton Rapids, Makayla Evansen of Portland and Jocelyn Rolston of Olivet — with voting open until noon Wednesday. Ellis set a school record at the DeWitt Invitational, Evansen helped secure a sweep of Lansing Catholic in volleyball, and Rolston shot a career-best 80 at the CAAC Open.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan State football coach Jonathan Smith said senior linebacker Wayne Matthews III has a chance to play at Nebraska this weekend after moving around in practice following his injury at USC on Sept. 20 when he was treated at LA General Hospital. Smith also said safety Nikai Martinez and defensive end Quindarius Dunnigan may play in the game—offering a positive update as other injured players are expected to remain sidelined for longer periods.  Lansing State Journal
  • MSU women's soccer beat Wisconsin 6-0 + the win kept them undefeated in Big Ten play with key goals from Kennedy Bell and Emerson Sargeant. The team will host Ohio State on Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. as they prepare for their next contest.  The State News
  • In Greater Lansing high school football, junior Griffin Long led Morrice to a 54 to 32 win over Fulton with 204 passing yards, 229 rushing yards and multiple scores—he also contributed with tackles and interceptions. Williamston improved to 5 to 0 with a 43 to 0 shutout of St. Johns in a key CAAC Red game.  Lansing State Journal
