COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The former executive director of Cristo Rey Community Center and Catholic Charities stepped down after turning a near-closing of the center into lasting programs that served Lansing’s Hispanic community—he said his work restored hope amid tough financial challenges. He added that partnerships with University of Michigan Health-Sparrow and Delta Dental Foundation, along with repurposing the Children’s Home with Michigan Health and Human Services, will secure program stability by 2026—ensuring the mission continues.  Lansing City Pulse

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Better Aged MSU opened Aug. 28 in downtown East Lansing and sells vintage clothing with Michigan State gear—drawing students and nostalgic parents. Manager Dom Radashaw, who helped run the Grand Rapids shop, said local customers are now also bringing in items for resale with payments based on the expected sale speed.  Lansing City Pulse

  • Former Londoner Harry Francis stars as LeFou in Beauty and the Beast, his first national tour since moving to the U.S. three years ago, as the updated show uses new technology and longer musical numbers—bringing classic Disney magic to life.  Lansing City Pulse
  • SiriusXM DJ Phlash Phelps will open his November 10 show by playing Gordon Lightfoot’s 'The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald' to mark the 50th anniversary of the shipwreck that claimed 29 lives; Capital Area District Libraries in Lansing will host two programs—one with shipwreck historian Ric Mixter and one with tribute performer Michael Fornes—to explain the tragedy and its famous song.  Lansing City Pulse
  • City Pulse announced its 18th annual Top of the Town contest partnering with WKAR—introducing new voting categories such as Best Rock Star Over 75 and other local awards. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Michigan leaders announced a one-week stopgap plan to keep government operating but did not include funding for K-12 schools, leaving district officials unsure of their budgets. A survey of school leaders showed many districts have taken high-interest loans, cut extracurricular programs, and paused hiring—raising concerns over essential services.  WKAR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local endorsers remind Lansing voters to support the proposed City Charter revision that expands council representation, consolidates elections and saves taxpayer money, and they back Mayor Andy Schor for securing funding for downtown projects and a public safety building. They also urge support for thoughtful council candidates including Vandenboom, Martinez, Nevárez Martinez and Lowry—each seen as a strong voice for our community.  Lansing City Pulse
  • Governor Whitmer signed a continuation budget early Wednesday to keep Michigan government running and assure state employees that their jobs will not be affected—lawmakers will finalize the full budget soon.  FOX 47
  • Military personnel in Michigan continue their duties today despite the federal government shutdown—leaving them without pay as Congress fails to reach a funding agreement. SPORTS NEWS

  • Tom Izzo will join MSU students in a campout on Munn Field Friday night after the basketball game at Breslin Center—he said his view of campus traditions and past tailgates fuels his energy heading into his 31st season.   • Junior goalie Landyn Loveless made several key saves on Sept. 30 to help Mason win 2-1 against East Lansing in the Gold Cup semifinal; the Bulldogs will host DeWitt today—giving them a chance to defend their title.  Lansing State Journal
