COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, Lansing Community College and the Capital Area Manufacturing Council will hold a 9 a.m. press conference for National Manufacturing Day and offer a tour of LCC West while a blood drive runs at the Gannon Building from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.—later, the Beauty for Ashes Gala begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Crowne Plaza Hotel to support sex trafficking survivors and the House of Promise.  FOX 47
  • The Meridian Township Fire Department is hosting a Fire Prevention Open House tomorrow from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Central Fire Station #91 on Okemos Road in Okemos—visitors will see a fire apparatus display, kids’ agility test, fire safety tips on lithium-ion battery care, and enjoy free donuts and cider.  Stacks 92.1

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Lansing’s restaurant scene saw more openings than closures this summer as new spots like Auntie Anne’s/Cinnabon, Bob’s Big Boy, and Grains Indian Cuisine emerged while longtime establishments such as Papa John’s Pizza and the first Starbucks closed after many years in business. Local investors and owners expect additional restaurants will open soon (boosting the city's dining options) as the trend continues.  WJIM AM

  • Fans can still buy the last available seats to watch Taylor Swift’s movie event The Life of a Showgirl — the screening features a sing-along and behind-the-scenes footage today and through Oct 5 while tickets cost $12 and are available online from theater chains such as AMC and Regal.  Lansing State Journal

  • Photos from Monday, Sept. 29 capture fall colors and wildlife at Cavanaugh Park in Lansing — featuring deer, squirrels, and blooming wildflowers along scenic trails.  Lansing State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Michigan lawmakers approved a 2026 state budget that cuts funds for many agencies while adding $1.1 billion for road improvements — they also passed a 24% tax on marijuana wholesale sales to boost future transportation funds.  Lansing State Journal
  • The final beam for the new city hall was set in place yesterday in downtown Lansing during a topping off ceremony — city leaders including Mayor Andy Schor and former Mayor David Hollister signed the beam as a wetting tree was attached for the project landscape.  Lansing State Journal
  • The Ingham County 911 center is operating with only 27 trained operators compared to the 56 positions needed, forcing staff to work 12-16-hour shifts—county officials are working with unions and exploring temporary agency help to maintain emergency services.  FOX 47
  • Michigan lawmakers approved $160M in earmarks for projects from police equipment to infrastructure upgrades yesterday — a measure that also introduced new transparency rules requiring public justification for every request.  Bridge Michigan
  • The Michigan Legislature passed a bipartisan budget on October 3rd—two days after the constitutional deadline—after months of delay and political drama. Governor Whitmer said she will sign it early next week, and the bill sets aside extra funds for roads, K-12 schools and a new 24% tax on marijuana.  Michigan Public Radio

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan State's football team will play Nebraska today at Memorial Stadium starting at 4:05 p.m. ET on FS1. Nebraska enters the game favored by 11.5 points—holding a 9-4 series edge—after a bye week.  Lansing State Journal
  • Registration is open for the 7th Annual Izzo Run/Walk/Roll on Michigan State University's campus this spring. The event will take place on Sunday, April 26, 2026—participants have various race options and can donate to local charities.  Lansing State Journal
  • DeWitt boys soccer captured their second CAAC Gold Cup title in three seasons with a 3-1 win over Mason on Oct. 2—Raborn scored twice and Joseph Zubal added one goal to help the Panthers avenge an earlier loss and build momentum heading into the playoffs. The team finished a tough regular season with key wins over strong opponents.  Lansing State Journal
