COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of East Lansing announced that several streets will be closed Friday, Oct. 10 for the annual Michigan State University Homecoming Parade, which will start at 6 p.m. at Abbot Road and Burcham Drive and end on Farm Lane—residents are advised to use alternate routes and adjust their travel plans to avoid delays.  City of East Lansing

  • April Robart opened the eighth Cheese Lady shop in East Lansing on Sept. 4 — the store sells 127 specialty cheeses and imported items while letting customers taste samples to learn about fine cheeses.  Lansing City Pulse

CULTURE NEWS

  • Lansing musician Sean Anthony Sullivan will release his album Rock and Roll Will Save Us All on November 7, a 10-track record pressed on vinyl at Third Man Records in Detroit—mixing raw sound with Michigan blue-collar pride.  Lansing City Pulse
  • On Oct. 7, MSU students and community members attended Avatar: The Last Airbender in Concert at Great Cobb Hall — an orchestral show featuring music by Jeremy Zuckerman with visuals from the TV series. Earlier, College Night by the Wharton Center Student Marketing Organization set up themed decorations, snacks, and activities to celebrate the series' 20th anniversary.  The State News
  • MSU Department of Theatre put on two plays in repertory — The Seagull and Stupid F**king Bird — that made audiences feel strong emotions as actors showed both sadness and humor.   • Gianna Taracks, manager at Strange Matter Coffee, said she makes coffee with skill and care using eight years of experience. Lansing’s coffee scene now mixes classic diner brews with new third-wave techniques—offering different flavors for local coffee lovers.  Lansing City Pulse

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Trans advocates at a recent Lansing City Council meeting asked for stronger protections after a man threatened people outside Avenue Cafe and raised fears in the trans community. Councilmember Jackson scheduled a meeting on October 8 to discuss solutions—activists requested that police not join the discussion to keep the space safe.  Lansing City Pulse
  • The Michigan Cannabis Industry Association has filed a lawsuit against the state over a planned 24% wholesale tax on marijuana set to take effect January 1 — the tax is expected to generate about $420 million a year for road improvements. The association says the tax violates constitutional rules requiring either voter approval or three fourths legislative vote — a claim it will prove in court.  Stacks 92.1
  • Officials are considering cutting billions in funding for clean energy programs, including a $500M award given last year to GM to convert its Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant into an electric vehicle facility—this review is part of an ongoing evaluation of past awards by the DOE.   • Gov. Whitmer signed a new budget deal on Oct. 7 that adds funds for road repairs, keeps Medicaid funding, and adjusts taxes on cannabis while cutting vacant state positions.   • UM Health-Sparrow has opened a new pharmacy and urgent care center in downtown Lansing today in the former Rite Aid building on Michigan Avenue. The center fills a long-standing gap by offering essential medications and health services seven days a week — improving local healthcare access.  FOX 47
  • Kroger recalled two deli pasta salads after an FDA listeria warning—customers in Michigan should check for the recalled Basil Pesto Bowtie Pasta Salad sold 9/6–10/2 and the Smoked Mozzarella Penne Salad sold starting 8/29 and either return the items or clean any touched surfaces.  WJIM AM
  • MSU and NAMI Lansing are hosting a public forum today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at MSU’s Facility for Rare Isotope Beams Auditorium to talk about mental health as a human right and ways to help one in five Michigan adults who face mental challenges each year—experts will share community-based ideas to support those in need.  WKAR
