BUSINESS NEWS

  • Yeti Kitchen, one of the first restaurants at Lansing Shuffle, will close on Nov 2 due to difficulties managing its three locations—its closure marks a change for the food hall that opened in early 2023 and has served Nepali dishes like butter chicken, garlic naan, and momos.  Lansing State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Greater Lansing theaters and music venues plan many events this October. Riverwalk Black Box Theater will show a dark comedy play + MSU’s College of Music will mark 25 years with jazz and chamber concerts, and shows at LCC + Wharton Center will offer more fun performances.  Lansing State Journal
  • Disney’s national tour production 'Beauty and the Beast' will perform at Wharton Center from October 14 to 19, directed by Matt West and featuring music by Alan Menken with new songs by Tim Rice—presenting the classic tale with updated elements.  The State News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Research from Michigan State University showed that being far from childcare centers cost Michigan nearly $3 billion every year in lost wages and tax revenue—44% of residents live in areas without enough childcare. The study also found that over 5,500 women would join the workforce if childcare were closer.  WKAR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Michigan State University cut funding for CORES and CAMS groups and now they must change their mission statements to keep their registered status — the change ended a $25,000 allocation and has left many students feeling that their voices are being silenced. University officials said they are reviewing student organization rules and will support other groups through alternative means.  The State News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • With freezing temperatures expected this week, residents are advised to insulate pipes and drain outdoor hoses to prevent costly water damage—experts recall that last winter's cold led to significant home damage from burst pipes.  Lansing State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A commission member said the East Lansing police blocked the public release of an August report on officer use of force when it included names that were removed before—she said the change makes the report confidential and may lead to a special meeting in mid-November. The department had released monthly reports since October 2021 but now cites a union agreement for changing its practice.  WKAR
  • Lansing will receive $23 million from Michigan’s new state budget to repair pothole-damaged roads. City officials say the funds will support repairs on local streets + help reduce costly car repairs for drivers.  FOX 47
  • Thousands of home health care workers in Michigan voted to unionize after a state law reclassified them as public employees for bargaining. If the vote stands, 32,000 workers will join SEIU Healthcare Michigan, while some opponents have filed a lawsuit (citing state constitutional issues) to block the move.  WKAR

SPORTS NEWS

  • Kennedy Bell, daughter of former MSU and NFL player Myron Bell, was named to the inaugural MAC Hermann Trophy midseason watchlist after scoring nine goals and recording four assists in 13 games for the MSU women’s soccer team. She said she is focused on winning a Big Ten Championship and reaching the NCAA tournament as her coach praised her fast adjustment to a tougher role—helping the Spartans stay near the top in Big Ten play.  The State News
  • Michigan State’s offensive line has struggled this season to protect the quarterback and open gaps for runners—injuries and poor blocking have weakened their play. Coach Jonathan Smith said the unit will need to improve as they face UCLA at Spartan Stadium on Saturday at noon.  The State News
  • Abdual-Carter Foreman, the latest LSJ high school athlete of week winner, helped Sexton secure its third win in four games by throwing for 196 yards and three touchdowns in Week 6. Foreman said his confidence is returning—he now trusts his receivers and makes faster decisions, which his coach said benefits the team.  Lansing State Journal
  • Sarah Weller, the LSJ girls athlete of the week, is a senior on the DeWitt swimming team who ranked second in the 50, 100 and 500 freestyle events—she said she will focus on her role as captain and look forward to states this season.  Lansing State Journal
