COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Oct. 9, Ingham County Animal Control took in five stray German Shepherd puppies found along M-52—four-month-old pups that await an owner to provide proof of ownership—and confirmed they are not available for adoption.  Lansing State Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Lansing State Journal announced a partnership with Perplexity—an AI-powered answer engine—so that verified local reporting is used in real-time search answers. The agreement, part of the USA TODAY Network, will support local journalism with additional revenue and strengthen community access to trusted news.  Lansing State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Michigan libraries and First Amendment groups are urging local residents to join Banned Books Week, which runs Oct. 5 to today, by reading banned books to support free expression—echoing the campaign theme 'Censorship is so 1984 Read for your Rights.' The event also marks Let Freedom Read Day as advocates call for upholding libraries' policies and opposing censorship.  Lansing State Journal
  • Polish American Heritage Month is celebrated in Michigan this October to honor Polish roots with events like a mass in Detroit on Oct.12 and a soup festival in Hamtramck on Oct.27 + displays of traditional food and music across the state. Organizers say the month marks long-standing traditions and contributions in areas like education, art, and business.  Lansing State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • After several years away, MSU’s Slow Food chapter returned to campus today to promote clean and fair food. The club—restarted by president TJ Teshome—is now meeting every two weeks to connect local farmers with consumers and address food access challenges.  The State News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hecate Energy has proposed a 2,000-acre solar project called Fiddlehead Solar in Eaton Rapids — the plan will use a state approval process to bypass local zoning rules. Local residents expressed concerns about the project’s effect on their rural community and plan to challenge it during upcoming public input.  FOX 47
  • Overnight on Oct 8, BirdCast recorded 1.25 billion birds in flight over the eastern U.S. with 5 million flying above Michigan, marking its highest migration night ever. On Oct 10, BirdCast reported 367 million birds crossing the country—Michigan’s Lake Michigan coast experienced medium to high numbers—and the statewide fall migration reached 232 million as of Oct 9.  Lansing State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At the ASMSU meeting on October 9, four bills were passed unanimously, including allocations for drink covers, food trucks at sporting events, $5000 for the Social Norms Ducks Campaign, and support for local economic practices. The Vice President of Student Affairs and the Provost presented campus updates on CAPS funding and student organization guidelines while further review is planned for a bill on suicide prevention signage.  The State News

SPORTS NEWS

  • MSU women's soccer won 1-0 over Michigan in Ann Arbor today—Renee Watson scored a career-high goal that moved the Spartans into second place in the Big Ten. The team will face No. 7 Iowa on the road Sunday.  The State News
  • Michigan State hockey lost 4-3 in its home opener at Munn Ice Arena—where a last-second goal by the New Hampshire Wildcats decided the game—and coach Adam Nightingale said the team would work hard to improve after the loss.  The State News
  • Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo and his four captains said the team is strengthening its versatile lineup during practice in preparation for exhibition games on Oct 23 and Oct 28—followed by a season opener on Nov 3 at Breslin Center. Players are working on offense and defense to get ready for the season.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan State’s men’s and women’s golf teams will travel to Scotland to compete in the St. Andrews Links Collegiate starting Monday, Oct. 13; the first two rounds of stroke play are scheduled at the Jubilee Course and the medal match round will be played on The Old Course for TV coverage. After the main tournament, the teams will face Cal, Princeton and the University of St Andrews and spend five more days playing on Scotland’s top courses—experiencing both high competition and local hospitality during an 11-day trip.  Lansing State Journal
