Good morning, Lansing. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 12th of October.
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ The Great Lakes commercial fishing industry is struggling as invasive mussels have sharply reduced whitefish numbers and forced fishers like Richard Boda to sell their boats. Many are switching to other species, but a 70% drop in whitefish catches in Lakes Michigan and Huron continues to put this family trade at risk — a sign that the industry may soon vanish. EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Governor Whitmer signed a state budget that bans schools from offering financial rewards to boost Count Day attendance and requires school leaders to notify parents when they use a reading curriculum not approved by state standards. The budget also provides grants to lower class sizes, removes up to 15 virtual instruction days, and creates a fund to boost teacher pay + increases reporting on at-risk funding. Bridge Michigan
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ In lakes Michigan and Huron, invasive mussels have taken nutrients away from the lakebeds and hurt whitefish numbers, affecting local jobs and traditions. Scientists plan to help by lowering catch limits and moving some fish to smaller ponds—while Lake Superior still enjoys healthier whitefish as mussels remain few. Bridge Michigan
