BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ RJ's Burgers & Ice Cream Co. will open its second location in East Lansing at 1399 E. Grand River Ave.—the grand opening on December 9 will honor what would have been the 14th birthday of the owners' late son, RJ. The State News
- ➤ A Florida-based coffee chain Foxtail Coffee will open its largest Michigan location in a 2485 square foot storefront near Michigan State University in East Lansing next spring— the shop will feature study areas, a community mural and plans to hire 15 employees. Local firms will handle design and construction as Foxtail expands beyond the western side of the state. Lansing State Journal
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, one of the highest grossing Broadway musicals, opens today at the Wharton Center in East Lansing—featuring string characters like Belle, the Beast, and Gaston—and runs through Sunday Oct. 19. Stacks 92.1
- ➤ Yesterday, local leaders and neighbors gathered on the capitol lawn to celebrate Indigenous Peoples' Day with traditional dances and music while noting progress in tuition waivers and changes in cultural recognition, yet challenges like racism remain (Jessica Chingman-Roosa said better government support is needed). ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Lansing added 5,400 jobs from June 2024 to June 2025, making it one of Michigan’s fastest-growing job markets and the state’s second-highest region. Manufacturing led with 1,800 new positions—government and health services added 1,000 and 900 jobs respectively. FOX 47
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ MSU researchers tracked the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, discovered in July and last captured near Mars on Oct. 3, and they said no new observations are being taken now because the comet is behind the Sun (which makes it hard for local telescopes to view). They expect to resume tracking it in December and note that only very powerful telescopes may pick it up in Mid-Michigan. WKAR
- ➤ Spartans returned to campus this week for Homecoming as alumni, students and community members joined events in East Lansing. Monday’s magic show has passed, today's Healthy Homecoming Walk and Paint The Rock event is underway, and bagel breakfast with tower climbing on Wednesday, a Stuff-A-Zeke celebration on Thursday, a parade on Friday and a football game on Saturday will follow — the weeklong festivities aim to strengthen campus bonds. - ➤ The Michigan Capitol’s historic glass floor is being restored as nearly 700 of its 976 tiles are replaced with accurate replicas. The project by Lansing Glass Company using tiles from Lucid Glass Studio will finish by the end of October — returning the floor to its 1878 design. Lansing State Journal
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Flu season is here and the Barry-Eaton District Health Department advises Michigan residents to get the flu vaccine soon because it takes two weeks to work — high-risk groups like young children, adults over 55, pregnant women, and those with chronic conditions should act quickly. WKAR
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Michigan State volleyball swept Indiana in three sets at Breslin Center—showing strong defense and key kills by Mumcular, Doezema and Kulig. The win improved the team record to 4 to 2 in Big Ten play—and they will face Nebraska on October 17 at 7 p.m. The State News
- ➤ Jonathan Smith, Michigan State football's second-year coach, said Monday that his job is at risk after the team lost by a score of 38 to 13 to UCLA. He said he understands fans' anger and will work to improve the team ahead of a challenging road game against Indiana on Saturday. Lansing State Journal
- ➤ No. 18 MSU women's soccer lost 3-5 to No. 7 Iowa in an eight-goal game that ended the Spartans' seven-game unbeaten streak in the Big Ten—MSU will face Indiana at DeMartin Stadium on Thursday at 7 p.m. as they work to strengthen their defense. The State News
- ➤ The Lansing State Journal invites readers to vote for the boys high school athlete of the week for Oct. 6-11, featuring Okemos tennis player Kai Minamisono, DeWitt football player Traverse Moore and Grand Ledge cross country runner Rylen Richey—voting remains open until noon Wednesday, Oct. 15.
