COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Lansing is holding its 7th Annual Coat Drive until November 7 to collect new or gently used coats, hats, and gloves for all ages — donation bins are set up at City Hall and several community centers. Items will be distributed on November 20 at Downtown CATA Station.  WKAR
  • On Oct. 18th, more than 170 guns were turned in at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church during its fourth annual buyback event as local police and volunteers followed strict safety protocols—checking each firearm against federal records. Cash payments ranged from $3,000 in the first year to $17,800 this year as the program continued to offer a safe way to exchange guns.  Lansing State Journal
  • Local businesses in Lansing are planning creative Halloween events to boost community connections—Chengdu Teahouse will host The Bewitched Tea Party led by owner Elyse Ribbons and influencer Tricoci Chaney on October 26 as part of a series of festivities including trivia nights and costume contests.  WKAR

BUSINESS NEWS

  • General Motors reported Q3 earnings of $1.33 billion and $1.35 per share with revenue of $48.59 billion beating Wall Street's $44.27 billion estimate despite a drop from last year's $3.06 billion—GM announced plans to invest over $1 billion in retooling Lansing’s Grand River Car Assembly for new Cadillac CT5 production and now forecasts full-year earnings between $9.75 and $10.50 per share.  Stacks 92.1

CRIME NEWS

  • A Lansing nonprofit is suing a co-founder and a former employee for alleged embezzlement and defamation after unauthorized purchases, including vehicles and large cash withdrawals at a Detroit casino, hurt its mission—officials say the case has led to police and legal reviews.  Lansing State Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Grand Ledge jumped from $2.39 to $3.19 per gallon after a fire at a major Midwest refinery that supplies Michigan—drivers in Lansing saw a rise of over 25 cents compared to last week. Experts say prices will fall below $3 once the refinery issue is resolved.  FOX 47

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Since spring, non-tenure track faculty at MSU have felt a 9% budget cut that delayed contracts, reduced teaching loads and lowered employee benefits—faculty warn that this may lead to larger classes and fewer course options.  The State News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • An animal rights group will appeal to the Michigan Supreme Court after courts denied a hearing on whether six chimpanzees are held unlawfully at a Menominee County zoo—group leaders want a decision that gives the apes legal rights and moves them to a nature preserve. The appeal will ask for a change in law that currently treats the animals as property.  WKAR
  • City officials held a meeting at Schmidt Community Center to explain the NOVA transitional housing project — which uses 50 modular pods to support people experiencing homelessness for 6 to 24 months — and answer questions from about 30 residents. Some locals expressed concerns about property values while others supported the plan, and officials expect to launch the community by September.  FOX 47
  • Lansing Board of Water and Light hosted an event to help residents manage rising heating costs after a rate increase took effect on Oct. 1—attendees received information on bill assistance programs and millions in aid were distributed to those concerned about affording winter heat.  FOX 47

HEALTH NEWS

  • University of Michigan Health Sparrow has opened a new comprehensive breast center in Lansing—designed to reduce wait times and help patients get cancer screening and treatment during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The center uses new technology to combine services into one location—letting patients avoid extra travel while serving all who need care.  FOX 47
  • MSU kinesiology PhD student Youngjun Lee has been testing VR boxing to help people with autism ease anxiety and stress, following a study in August that showed many students with ASD suffered from anxiety. The program—designed to offer a new way for exercise-based mental health relief—is expected to expand at the university.  WKAR

  • On Tuesday, Oct. 21, Lansing Catholic boys soccer beat No. 7 Alma by a score of 4 to 1 at Williamston High School to reach the regional final for the first time since 2016—seniors scored all four goals. Coach Gus Flores said the team will stay desperate as they prepare to face No. 9 Frankenmuth on Oct. 23.  Lansing State Journal
  • Greater Lansing high school football teams enter the final regular season week with playoff brackets to be released on Sunday, Oct 26. Teams including East Lansing, Owosso, St. Johns, Sexton, Fowlerville and Leslie vie for postseason spots while clubs like Lansing Catholic, Lakewood, Alma, Holt, Charlotte, Stockbridge and Fulton aim to boost their playoff points+upcoming games will decide their fate.  Lansing State Journal
