COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mason's Lee Austin Park is a small park with Sycamore Creek flowing through it and direct access to the 2.5-mile Hayhoe Riverwalk — the park offers a playground, exercise equipment, picnic tables, and grills. Parking is ample but no bathrooms are on site.  Lansing State Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Consumers Energy’s approved 8.1% rate increase will add about $6.44 a month to bills starting November 1 to fund a $157 million plan for safer gas pipelines—low-income assistance is also part of the program.  WJIM AM

EDUCATION NEWS

  • MSU Cash Drops, an Instagram account started in September, has been leaving cash around campus for students to claim—students race to grab drops ranging from $10 to $100, including one at the Oct 11 Homecoming Football Game, and the account now has over 5,000 followers.  The State News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The East Lansing Police Department advised fans that those celebrating the MSU-U-M game today should follow safety guidelines and seek help if they feel sick (medical amnesty is available) to prevent alcohol- or drug-related incidents. They stressed avoiding open containers and impaired driving (rules apply citywide) during the tailgating and game viewing.  City of East Lansing
  • SNAP benefits have been paused for nearly 1.5-million Michiganders due to the federal government shutdown— the state Department of Health and Human Services said it will hold future payments until further notice.  Stacks 92.1
  • Gov. Whitmer pardoned Lue Yang, a Hmong community leader and president of the Hmong Family Association, on Oct.22 to set aside his old conviction as he faced potential deportation by ICE. Advocates said the pardon aimed to help him move forward—although ICE might still try to deport him.  Lansing State Journal
  • At their meeting on Oct. 23, ASMSU passed Bill 62-30—advocating for charges against Eli Folts to be dropped—and the group said it would ask President Kevin Guskiewicz for clearer protest rules while planning to bring the bill to faculty for further review.  The State News

  • A limited edition bobblehead from the National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum was released Oct 24 in East Lansing ahead of today's football game—each collectible features MSU and U-M players with a replica of the Paul Bunyan Trophy and has been numbered to 2,025.  Lansing State Journal
  • During the final week of high school football in Greater Lansing, five teams finished their regular season undefeated—DeWitt, Pewamo-Westphalia, Portland St. Patrick, Williamston and Portland all posted perfect records with strong wins. Each team recorded key touchdowns and defensive plays that kept their unbeaten streaks intact.  Lansing State Journal
  • MSU held off Bowling Green for a 75-66 win in an exhibition game Friday night as Carr scored 17 points and Kohler added 15 points and 10 rebounds—coach Tom Izzo rotated players frequently to test different lineups. The Spartans will face No. 4 UConn on Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m. in Hartford.  The State News
  • The Michigan State football team will try to break its four-game losing streak when it faces Michigan today at Spartan Stadium — the game starts at 7:45 p.m. on NBC, with local radio broadcasts also available.  Lansing State Journal
  • High school football in Greater Lansing is wrapping up its regular season as Friday’s games ended with varied scores, including a CAAC Blue matchup where East Lansing led Holt 21 to 14 at halftime and wins for DeWitt and Williamston. Today, Coleman will face Morrice—fans are tracking the live updates as more scores come in.  Lansing State Journal
  • The MSU men’s club lacrosse team moved up to the National College Lacrosse League after outgrowing its former division and will play games against both Division I and Division II teams this season—results will determine if they stay in the new league.  WKAR
