COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lansing food pantries are preparing for a surge in demand as paused SNAP benefits amid a government shutdown leave many families at risk—The Fledge and the Greater Lansing Food Bank report that local donors like Samantha Snider are stepping up with vital food contributions to help families, seniors, and veterans. Every donation matters as pantry organizers brace for increased need during these uncertain times.  FOX 47
  • Former Detroit Lions wide receiver Herman Moore is set to serve as grand marshal of the Electric Light Parade at the 41st annual Silver Bells in the City celebration in Lansing. The parade will begin at 6 p.m. on Nov.21 from Lenawee Street and South Washington Square — the event marks the official start of the holiday season ahead of the Detroit Lions' Thanksgiving game.  FOX 47

  • Farmers in Michigan are using the new website MIFarmLink to connect landowners with new farmers—helping older growers find someone to take over when they retire. The site lets owners list available farms and lets future farmers post what they need to start farming—making it simpler for both sides to meet.  WKAR

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mason voters will decide on a 2025 school bond proposal that will renovate the middle school, high school auditorium and transportation facility while finishing HVAC work started in 2017 and keeping the tax rate at 5.68 mills—Superintendent Gary Kinzer stressed fiscal responsibility. Some residents offered mixed opinions about the proposal amid concerns over rising expenses.  FOX 47

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica with 185 mph winds+ the storm caused severe structural damage and long-lasting power outages, leaving many in danger. Lansing restaurant owner Wayne Frazer is anxiously waiting for word from his daughter in Montego Bay, who gave birth amid the storm.  FOX 47

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lansing is moving forward with repurposing 50 mobile housing pods it bought for $600,000 from a Kalamazoo nonprofit to house the homeless—pods originally purchased in 2021 were auctioned this summer. Kim Coleman said the temporary solution is not one-size-fits-all—officials plan to address housing needs while longer-term strategies develop.  Stacks 92.1
  • State Rep. Penelope Tsernoglou announced that $750,000 in state funds will repair Lake Lansing Dam in Haslett to fix a broken valve, support walls, run-off area, and other parts; county commissioner Tanya Pratt and Lake Lansing Property Owners Association president Claudia Kerbawy joined her. Repairs will begin next year—helping keep the lake and its parks safe for many visitors.  WKAR
  • The MSU Board of Trustees will reconsider a scaled-back Spartan Gateway project Friday as the university plans to remove the sports arena and relocate the development to a more central campus site (neighbors near Trowbridge Road have raised traffic and parking concerns).  FOX 47

  • Tom Izzo’s No.21 MSU team played an exhibition game against No.4 UConn in Hartford, Connecticut on Tuesday, Oct.28 — a key test before their season opener on Nov.3.  Lansing State Journal
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Frank stepped into action for Lansing Catholic when the starting goalie was injured during the regional final against No. 9 Frankenmuth, making key saves in both regulation and overtime to secure a win by a score of three to two. The Cougars will face No. 2 Detroit Country Day in the state semifinal today at 6 p.m. at Howell Parker Middle School—Frank’s strong performance boosted his confidence for future matches.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan State coach Jonathan Smith said he is evaluating backup quarterback Alessio Milivojevic—who has shown promise in late-game scoring—as the Spartans face Minnesota this weekend after starter Aidan Chiles struggled during a five-game losing streak.
