COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ingham County Animal Control and Shelter is asking for pet food donations as a SNAP freeze has led to rising demand and even forced a canceled mobile pantry distribution in Mason. Director Holly Guild said many families now rely on the donated pet food—items in open or sealed packages are welcome.  WKAR
  • Today, a candlelight vigil will be held at 7 p.m. at Beagle Middle School parking lot to honor a 12-year-old boy killed last Thursday. Neighbors can also join Día de los Muertos celebrations at Lansing Community College from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and pumpkin painting at Eastside Lansing Food Co-op from 3 to 6 p.m.—both events offer chances to remember and celebrate community ties.  FOX 47
  • Hundreds of cars lined up at a mobile food pantry in Bath Township on Wednesday as residents feared SNAP benefits might soon run out due to a federal shutdown. The Greater Lansing Food Bank will host over 20 mobile pantries in November to help those in need — officials said.  FOX 47

CULTURE NEWS

  • A 97-year-old bus built in 1928 with a chassis from REO Motor Car Company will be shipped to Pennsylvania this week for full restoration. The Tri-County Regional Planning Commission said restoration will cost between $90,000 and $150,000 and take 12 to 18 months—officials believe the project will honor Lansing's manufacturing heritage.  Lansing State Journal
  • Lansing artist Jozefa Rogocki won a Midwest Culture Bearers Award from Arts Midwest for her pysanky eggs that showcase traditional Slavic folk art. Her work using natural dyes from local plants will help her expand workshops and craft events — a true honor for our local art community.  Lansing City Pulse

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Michigan's regular firearm deer season will start Nov. 15 with staggered opening times by zone, and hunters can purchase licenses online or at local retailers until then. New regulations effective Aug. 1 extend the late antlerless season to Jan. 11 and require a 150-yard safety zone (from occupied buildings) (including barns and cabins).  Lansing State Journal

  • Based on votes in City Pulse’s 2024 Top of the Town contest, local restaurants were ranked for top wine lists including Bowdie’s Chophouse in Lansing, Bridge Street Social in DeWitt, Dusty’s Wine Bar in Okemos which is scheduled to reopen in mid to late November, Soup Spoon Café in Lansing and Toscana Kitchen & Wine Market in Lansing.  Lansing City Pulse
  • Grains Indian Cuisine opened on South Waverly Road after taking over the former Flap Jack Restaurant and now serves a range of authentic Indian dishes that excite taste buds.
