COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lansing Township’s Thomas F. Keegan Nature Park is a 10-acre nature spot with trails along the Grand River and street parking at the end of a cul-de-sac (located on the 1800 block of Boynton Drive, east of Waverly Road) that offers benches and picnic tables (no bathrooms are available) for quiet outings.  Lansing State Journal
  • Families across Mid-Michigan enjoyed Halloween weekend events when free trick-or-treating was held at the Ingham County Fairgrounds in Mason and a display of 5,000 carved pumpkins showcased family fun. A haunted attraction in Leslie remains open today for a 25 to 30 minute immersive experience costing $28 — additional events like a trunk or treat and a haunted mermaid barn featured throughout the area.  FOX 47

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The MSU Board of Trustees on Oct. 31 approved a revised Spartan Gateway plan that reopens proposals for a scaled-back project without a $150 million sports arena or hotel. The new proposal moves the development near Spartan Stadium — developers will be asked to present multiple plans for the project.  Lansing State Journal
  • At Friday's meeting, Michigan State University’s Board of Trustees changed Jabbar Bennett’s title from Vice President and Diversity Officer to Vice President and Chief Inclusion Officer—this change comes as the university responds to federal pressure regarding diversity programs. Some trustees opposed the move while officials stressed that the work and mission remain unchanged.  The State News
  • MSU's Board of Trustees approved a request for an extra $70 million from the state for a new Engineering and Digital Innovation Center on south campus, which will cover 260,000 square feet — house 65 researchers and 12 classrooms. The center will cost $340 million and builds on $30 million already provided by the state plus nearly $100 million in private donations.  The State News

  • Photographs taken on Tuesday, Oct. 28 show vibrant fall colors along the Grand River at Thomas F. Keegan Nature Park in Lansing Township. The images capture a sunrise over the river, a deer among the trees, and a Great Blue Heron on a rock—painting a picture of autumn in the park.  Lansing State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Due to a federal government shutdown, SNAP benefits are not being distributed today and residents can visit online resources for food pantries, soup kitchens, and meal programs (DoorDash is also offering free meals) while the state processes applications. Officials advise keeping contact information updated so that when benefits resume, recipients receive timely notices.  Michigan Public Radio

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan State University held a public meeting on Friday morning and approved Spartan Ventures so the school could support student athletes with NIL opportunities. MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz was authorized to sign an affiliation agreement with the new nonprofit — a move meant to modernize athletics and boost long-term competitiveness.  Stacks 92.1
  • Michigan State will try to snap a five-game losing streak as it visits Minnesota today at 3:30 p.m.—the Spartans need wins in three of their last four games to qualify for a bowl game—at Huntington Bank Stadium. This 50th meeting between the teams—MSU has held a 30–19 series lead—will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network and local radio on WMMQ 94.9 FM and WJIM 1240 AM.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan State's senior forward Grace VanSlooten earns major preseason praise as she makes the All-Big Ten team and appears on national watch lists—she will lead the team at a home opener against Mercyhurst at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 6th.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan State women's soccer, ranked No. 9 nationally, will face Northwestern at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday in West Lafayette, and coach Jeff Hosler said his team is ready to win after past tough tournaments + freshman goalkeeper Noelle Henning earned a Big Ten weekly award for her strong saves. The Spartans hope a win in the conference tournament will help them get a top NCAA seed + as their recent winning streak builds extra confidence.  The State News
