COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Across Mid-Michigan, residents plan Veterans Day events with a parade on Nov. 8 in Brighton and ceremonies in Lansing and at Michigan State University — these events honor personal stories of service and remembrance. Local businesses will offer free meals and discounts to veterans while the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency stresses that gratitude for service lasts beyond one day.  WKAR

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Ashley Furniture will open a 95,340-square-foot store at Meridian Mall on Nov. 8 at 11 a.m. in a space that has been vacant since Younkers closed in 2018—its grand opening will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the new tenant's arrival.  Lansing State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Voters in Ingham, Eaton, and Jackson counties approved most school funding proposals in Tuesday's election for Mason, Stockbridge, Eaton Rapids, Waverly, and Jackson Public Schools—voting margins ranged from 53 percent to 63 percent in favor. The results show ongoing community support for school bonds and millage renewals across the region.  WKAR

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Michigan’s environment department urged residents to donate or compost unpainted jack-o'-lanterns to reduce methane from nearly 1 billion pounds of discarded pumpkins. Lansing is collecting pumpkins at its city recycling center while other sites, including at a local university, will accept donations through mid-November.  WKAR

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, Mayor Andy Schor and Lansing Fire Department leadership open the new Fire Station 2 at 2114 N Grand River Ave after a public safety millage approved local residents replaced an outdated station. Phase one of the Pleasant Grove Road project is complete with roadway repairs and repaving, and Jackson begins its fall leaf collection program through December 5.  FOX 47
  • Lansing provided $10,000 in emergency funding to the Greater Lansing Food Bank to help feed 200 families through drive-through mobile food distributions amid cuts to assistance and frozen paychecks. One event is held today at the Tabernacle of David Church in southwest Lansing — a second is scheduled for Nov. 15 at South Church of the Nazarene.  WKAR
  • Delhi Township is now accepting leftover pumpkins at its Recycling Center on Grovenburg Road for the sheep at the township’s wastewater treatment plant to eat—pumpkins with paint or decorations are not accepted.  Stacks 92.1
  • The federal government shutdown continues to delay flights at major airports as essential FAA and TSA workers keep working without pay—raising concerns for Michiganders planning Thanksgiving travel. Travelers can check flight status and wait times online at airports like Detroit Metro and Gerald R. Ford International to stay updated on changes.  Lansing State Journal
  • U.S. Rep. Tom Barrett asked MSU to adopt the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s working definition of antisemitism to help safeguard Jewish students on campus. MSU President Kevin Guskiewicz said a team is looking at the request and ways to protect student rights while keeping free speech open—Barrett has waited nearly six months for a decision.  The State News

  • MSU beat Colgate 80 to 69 at Breslin Center on Monday night—Coach Izzo said the team took too long to start against an inferior opponent. The Spartans will host Arkansas on Saturday, November 8th at 7:00 p.m. on FOX.  Stacks 92.1
  • After a loss in five sets to Purdue, Michigan State volleyball rebounded on Saturday by sweeping Rutgers three to zero at Breslin Center (using improved blocking, serving, and team chemistry). The Spartans will play University of Washington on November 7 in Seattle.  The State News
  • Six Michigan State women’s soccer players were honored with Big Ten postseason awards, matching the school record from 2022. Junior forward Kennedy Bell won Big Ten Forward of the Year with 10 goals and the team will travel to face UCLA in tournament semifinals tomorrow at 7 p.m.  The State News
  • The Michigan State women’s basketball team set a program record with 125 points in a 125-39 win over Mercyhurst at Breslin Center on Nov. 4. Coach Robyn Fralick said the team showed strong defense and had seven players score in double figures.  Lansing State Journal
