COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Strange Matter Coffee has collected over 1,500 pounds of food in six days by giving a free drink to customers who donate nonperishable items or a digital donation of at least five dollars to the Greater Lansing Food Bank. The drive began October 29 to help local families facing food insecurity and will continue until full SNAP benefits are restored or the end of 2025—manager Gianna Taracks said community support has exceeded expectations.  The State News
  • Downtown Lansing was filled with music and holiday cheer on November 6 when city officials and Lansing Board of Water & Light crews, with help from city workers, installed big red ornaments at Washington Square and Michigan Avenue — marking the start of the holiday season. Mayor Andy Schor, executive director Cathleen Edgerly, and Board general manager Dick Peffley were present at the ceremony.  Lansing State Journal

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Wendy’s announced it will close about 300 locations nationwide, which is a mid single-digit percentage of its 6,000 restaurants, starting in the fourth quarter of this year—no list of closures has been released. It remains unclear how many of its 218 Michigan restaurants will be affected as the chain works to improve franchisee performance.  Lansing State Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • MSU and Williamston Theatre teamed up to give theater students real work experience and credit in acting, design, and stage management—helping connect the school with local professionals. The new show A Sherlock Carol will run from Nov. 13 to Dec. 21.  The State News
  • Photos taken Tuesday, Nov. 4 captured vivid fall colors and natural views at McKinch Park in Lansing—showing mature trees and an inviting playground among the seasonal landscape.  Lansing State Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • After a four and a half hour closed session on Oct 21, the Lansing School District Board of Education upheld a student's expulsion from regular public schools following his possession of an unloaded firearm at Dwight Rich School—he may later enroll in alternative programs or online school per state law.  Lansing State Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Comanche Drive between Woodhill Drive and Mt. Hope Road in Meridian Township will be closed from Nov. 10 through Nov. 14 for emergency storm pipe repairs—travelers for the Woodhill Condominiums and Heartwood should use Copperhill Drive instead. Emergency vehicles will still have access during the repairs.  Lansing State Journal
  • The Capital Region International Airport in Lansing remains in normal operation during a government shutdown affecting 40 major airport hubs while TSA and FAA are fully staffed and 55 federal workers have not been paid since Oct. 1. Travelers are advised to arrive two hours early and check with their airlines for updated flight statuses—local businesses have arranged donations to support the affected workers.  WKAR

  • Three health insurance companies ceased or reduced their Affordable Care Act plans in Michigan, leaving about 200,000 residents searching for new coverage—experts warned rising costs may force more people to choose cheaper coverage or go without insurance as federal subsidy disputes continue.  Michigan Public Radio

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tom Izzo warned his Michigan State players that they must work hard for today's game against Arkansas—he said the team needs to show sharper focus after an 80-69 win over Colgate. He added that the Spartans must be ready to meet the challenge at 7 p.m. at Breslin Center.  Lansing State Journal
  • Amy Terrian had a strong college debut in the Michigan State women's basketball rout of Mercyhurst on November 4 at Breslin Center—she scored 15 points, was 5-of-8 from three, and assisted on a basket that gave her twin sister Anna her first college point. She said her summer workouts built her confidence as the team will face Eastern Michigan at home on November 9.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan State basketball beat Colgate and will play Arkansas while welcoming new recruit Jasiah Jervis; the hockey team will face Penn State and Gavin McKenna in upcoming contests—after the football team lost a controversial game to Minnesota.  Lansing State Journal
