COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Marine veteran Chris Buck reflected on his 26 years of service as the Marine Corps celebrated its 250th anniversary on Monday and Veterans Day on Tuesday. He marked the milestones — gathering with fellow veterans at the local American Legion — while Ingham County Animal Shelter offered free pet adoptions to veterans during the week.  FOX 47
  • Residents in an Old Town encampment have asked the city and judge to allow alternative heating sources like electric or kerosene heaters—since open flames and propane are banned by court order. The city activated its Code Blue extreme cold weather plan, but shelter capacity is low and a weekly hearing is set for today as the judge ordered the dismantling of the encampment by Nov 14 while over 40 people have signed up for shelter assistance.  WKAR
  • Lansing nonprofit Footprints of Michigan held its seventh annual Veterans Day shoe giveaway at the Fraternal Order of Eagles—ensuring local veterans received donated footwear as hundreds of community members showed their support. Executive Director Geronimo Lerma said the event began as a token of appreciation for unhoused veterans and grew into a local tradition honoring all who served.  FOX 47
  • Today, as near-freezing temperatures persist, warming centers in Lansing are providing shelter for residents. City Rescue Mission is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. then from 4 p.m. to 9 a.m. while Advent House operates Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  FOX 47

CULTURE NEWS

  • Grewal Hall in Lansing will host Michigan rock band The Verve Pipe—joined by Narc Out the Reds and Atomic Annie—on November 28 as fans can expect a night of classic hits and new music.  Lansing City Pulse

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Michigan Department of Natural Resources said a virus called EHD has been found in whitetail deer across 14 counties including Ingham and Washtenaw. The virus — spread by biting midges — does not harm people or pets but may increase deer deaths near water areas.  WJIM AM

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lansing City Council voted Monday to lift a demolition order for a downtown historic house designed by Darius Moon—marking the first such reversal in decades. Owner Alesia Flowers said she spent over $80,000 on repairs and is set to receive a $500,000 grant to continue restoration work.  WKAR
  • Michigan lawmakers Dingell and Walberg plan to introduce a bill this week that would boost funding for research to $500M over the next 10 years to control invasive mussels that threaten whitefish in the Great Lakes+ current federal research spending on mussels has been much lower than that for other invasive species.  Bridge Michigan
  • CATA announced that most bus routes will close on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, and limited curb-to-curb service will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.—riders must reserve rides between Nov. 13 and 24 as regular service resumes Friday, Nov. 28 while campus routes end on Nov. 26.  Lansing State Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Michigan health officials warned that flu cases are rising as colder weather forces more people indoors—residents are urged to get vaccinated now to build protection ahead of the peak season in November and December. They noted that the flu shot takes several weeks to work, so early vaccination is key.  WJIM AM

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Longtime local television news anchor David Andrews released his cookbook 'Baking News: Recipes & Stories from David Andrews' on Nov. 11—offering recipes and personal stories from his nearly 40-year career at WILX. A portion of the $25 sales will benefit the Capital Area Humane Society and Endeavor House Ministries and the book is available at local businesses.  Lansing State Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Michigan State women's basketball is ranked No. 24 in both the USA Today Coaches Poll and the AP Poll after season-opening wins over Mercyhurst and Eastern Michigan. The Spartans, with a 2—0 record, face Youngstown State today and will play Western Michigan on Nov. 16.  Lansing State Journal
  • Michigan State hockey earned Big Ten Star honors last weekend when junior goaltender Trey Augustine received First Star for keeping Penn State to one goal during a 2-1 overtime win and senior center Charlie Stramel received Third Star after scoring the game-winning goal in a 5-0 shutout.  The State News
